Discover Barbate – Nature, Coast and Culture

The La Breña y Marismas del Barbate Nature Park contains five ecosystems: marine areas, cliffs, pine forest, marshland and dune landscapes. The Barbate River marsh is a particularly species-rich wetland for birdwatching and lies along a major migratory bird route.

Nature and Trails

The Sendero Torre del Tajo begins at a car park on the A-2233 towards Los Caños. This car park is approximately 2.5 kilometres from the port of Barbate, at kilometre 19.5 on the left-hand side.

The Sendero Cabo de Trafalgar is an 11.3-kilometre route taking four hours and rated as low difficulty. It crosses the coastal areas of Barbate, Vejer de la Frontera and Conil de la Frontera. The cliffs of Barbate can be explored on a 7-kilometre cycling route; this route is also rated as low difficulty.

The different route lengths, hiking duration and the two modes of transport provide an objective basis for comparing options when planning your day. This makes it possible to compare a clearly defined coastal hike in terms of time with a shorter cycling tour as two independent ways of experiencing the landscape. In addition, the Barbate wetland places a natural area at the centre, with birdwatching and its migratory bird route offering a different focus from the coastal paths.

Culture and Coast

The Ermita de San Ambrosio is a Site of Cultural Interest and is one of the few surviving palaeochristian basilicas in the south of the Iberian Peninsula.

The Lonja Vieja was designed by Casto Fernández Shaw, built in 1943 and modelled externally on the bow of a ship.

Windsurfing, kitesurfing and rod fishing are practised in the vicinity of Punta de Trafalgar.

The area around the Punta de Trafalgar lighthouse contains archaeological remains, including a Roman temple dedicated to the god Juno with an altar for sacrifices, a Roman salting factory and part of a 9th-century watchtower that belonged to a Hispano-Muslim settlement.

The coast therefore brings together various historical periods alongside a 20th-century building and present-day activities in the Punta de Trafalgar area. Nature, maritime design, archaeological remains and water sports thus appear as clearly distinct themes within the same surroundings.

Traditions

The Feria del Atún takes place every year next to the Lonja Vieja.

Organised by the Barbate municipal council, the Semana Gastronómica del Atún includes public culinary demonstrations and tastings of traditional dishes based on bluefin tuna.

The two events connect the Lonja Vieja site with public events and the processing of bluefin tuna. Culinary demonstrations, tastings and the annual Feria each place a different emphasis within local traditions.

Getting There

Barbate can be reached by car or bus and has neither an airport nor rail services.

This means that getting there involves a clear distinction between road and bus connections, with no direct arrival by plane or train.
