Nature and Trails

Sima del Republicano is a cave with impressive karst formations and a documented depth of 1,100 metres. Poljé del Republicano is a closed valley formed by the dissolution of limestone; its drainage outlet lies in Sima del Republicano.

About one kilometre from the starting point, a car park and the beginning of the hiking trail to Llanos del Republicano are located on the site of a former quarry. The Ruta Villaluenga is a recommended route within the municipality of Villaluenga del Rosario. It can be travelled on foot, by bicycle or on horseback and leads through a forest with cork oaks, holm oaks and diverse vegetation. The different means of transport and the described trailhead can be incorporated separately into your personal daily itinerary. The cave, closed valley and forest section therefore stand alongside one another as different landscape forms within the nature themes.

Culture and History

The Plaza de Toros in Villaluenga del Rosario was built on existing rocks and has a polygonal geometric shape instead of a completely circular ground plan. The Iglesia San Miguel Arcángel stands next to the Alameda in Villaluenga del Rosario; the Baroque church has a simple Renaissance gable.

The former Iglesia de El Salvador in Calle Torre dates from 1722, was burned down by Napoleonic troops and is now used as a cemetery.

The historic buildings and cheese offerings set different priorities from the natural features; visitors can consider these areas side by side according to their own interests.

Cheese and Local Traditions

The Museo del queso explains the origins of cheese, its importance in the Mediterranean diet and its production process using information panels and two audiovisual presentations. The exhibition thus combines information about production with its context within the Mediterranean diet.

At the Queso Payoyo factory, visitors can taste cheese made from goat's milk, sheep's milk or a mixture of both types of milk directly and buy it in the factory shop. The three milk variants mentioned provide different starting points for the tasting.

For several years, Villaluenga del Rosario has hosted the Feria del Queso Artesanal de Andalucía.
