Alcalá de los Gazules: History, Nature and Holiday Rentals

History

The Torre del Homenaje, dating from the Islamic period, stands on Roman foundations at a former settlement site. It has three floors; the top floor offers views over the municipality. The remains of the Roman city of Lascuta are located on the Mesa del Esparragal, where settlement continued in the early Middle Ages with a Visigothic settlement. The Parroquia de San Jorge was built over the former castle mosque and features Late Gothic elements.

Three historic water sources are located near the town centre: Pozo de Arriba, Pozo de Enmedio and Pozo de Abajo. They supplied the population until running water arrived from Los Regalajes in 1877.
