Trails and Landscape

The Ruta del Lentisco is a circular hiking trail that starts at the Plaza de Toros Centenario in Algar and returns to its starting point. At 9.82 kilometres, it is marked with wooden posts: at intersections, the posts serve as signposts, while along the route they serve as reassurance markers.

The Ruta Vereda del Tempul offers a different type of trail. It is easily accessible, approximately 3 kilometres long and linear; its endpoint is on the shore of the Embalse de Guadalcacín II. This route offers views of the Sierra de las Cabras and the Sierra de la Sal.

The Camino de Chavarría connects the town centre of Algar with the Embalse de Guadalcacín. It passes through grazing areas, grazed dehesa landscapes with wild olive trees, as well as wooded areas with wild olive trees, holm oaks and Pyrenean oaks. The protected areas associated with the Camino de Chavarría are the Los Alcornocales Natural Park, a ZEPA, a LIC and the Intercontinental Mediterranean Biosphere Reserve of Andalusia-Morocco.

History and Culture

The Iglesia Parroquial de Santa María de Guadalupe was built in 1762–1763. Algar was founded on 13 October 1773, with the approval of Charles III, as Villa de Santa María de Guadalupe de Algar. A historical reenactment of the foundation includes a theatrical walking tour through the town, beginning at the town hall square.

Experiences and Events

The Subida a Algar is a motorsport hill climb held in Algar, in the province of Cádiz, Spain, and is part of the Campeonato de Andalucía de Montaña. It takes place on mountain roads near Algar with tight bends and steep climbs. The event is held annually, usually between March and April; the exact date varies from year to year.

In connection with Algar, hiking in the Tajo del Águila is considered a leisure activity. At the Embalse de Guadalcacín II, canoeing, sailing and spending time on a beach are leisure options associated with Algar.

Local Cuisine and Festivals

The dish Abajao Espárragos is prepared with green asparagus, garlic, onions, olive oil, 500 grams of natural or canned chopped tomatoes, salt, water and stale bread.

The “La Matanza del Cerdo” fair has become a local tradition in Algar after being held for four years. During the fair, the local population gathers to watch the slaughter and preparation of the pig.
