Tarifa between Fortress, Nature Park and Water Sports

Culture and History

At the highest point of Tarifa’s old town stands the Castillo de Guzmán el Bueno, which was built on the orders of Caliph Abd ar-Rahman III of Córdoba. The Castillo is a National Historic Monument and is classified as an asset of particular cultural interest as a 10th-century caliphal fortress, or alcazaba. Inside the Castillo, the caliphal walls are particularly noteworthy. Tarifa is still a fortified town and is one of the best-preserved towns of this kind in Spain. A section of Tarifa’s defensive walkway, which forms part of the Arrabal and Aljaranda enclosures, is open to visitors and offers views of the town and its surroundings.

Another historic destination is the Baelo Claudia Archaeological Complex at the Ensenada de Bolonia in Tarifa. It showcases a Roman city with a forum, temples, basilica, market, theatre, baths, industrial district, aqueducts and a fully preserved city wall.

Nature and Coast

El Estrecho Nature Park is a protected maritime-terrestrial area at the confluence of the Mediterranean and Atlantic and encompasses the municipalities of Algeciras and Tarifa. The municipality of Tarifa has almost 38 kilometres of predominantly flat beaches with fine sand.

The Los Lances trail begins at the car park by Los Lances town beach, near the Municipal Sports Stadium on the northwestern outskirts of Tarifa. As a walking route fully equipped with a wooden boardwalk, it runs through the wetland at Los Lances beach and is specially adapted for people with disabilities. Tarifa can be reached via the N-340.

The information point for El Estrecho Nature Park is located in Tarifa, in the La Peña area. It can be reached via the N-340 towards Cádiz–Tarifa, approximately 7 kilometres from Tarifa. The combination of coast, protected area and walking route can be considered separately for different daily rhythms.
