Los Caños De Meca – Trafalgar, Dunes and Coastal Paths

Los Caños De Meca reveals its coastal landscape at the Tómbolo de Trafalgar: it is officially designated a natural monument and is a small sandstone island connected to the coast by a double tombolo. At Punta de Trafalgar, fine-sand dunes, extensive beaches and a rocky area topped by the lighthouse come together.

Coast and History

Playa de Los Caños de Meca stretches from Cabo de Trafalgar to the foot of the cliffs of La Breña. In recent years, surfing and the culture associated with it have grown in importance on this beach. Windsurfing and kitesurfing are practised as recreational water sports in the area around Punta de Trafalgar.

Diving and snorkelling are practised in the coastal waters of La Breña y Marismas del Barbate Nature Park. The archaeological heritage around Faro de Trafalgar includes a Roman temple dedicated to the god Juno and a Roman fish-salting facility. Faro de Trafalgar can be reached from Los Caños de Meca via a paved road.

Torre de Meca is a 13.5-metre-high watchtower built at the beginning of the 19th century.

Nature

La Breña y Marismas del Barbate Nature Park extends into the Caños de Meca area and includes marine habitats, cliffs, pine forest, salt marshes and dune landscapes. Several hiking trails lead through the nature park, allowing visitors to experience its natural and cultural diversity.

The Cabo de Trafalgar–Caños de Meca trail is protected within the Tómbolo de Trafalgar natural monument and La Breña y Marismas del Barbate Nature Park. In addition, the protected area includes a LIC, a ZEPA and the coastal complex of environmental interest (PEPMF).

The Sendero del Acantilado runs across a large dune system that was separated from sea level by geological processes. Near Torre del Tajo, the Tajo or Barbate cliff rises just over 100 metres above sea level; pine trees were planted on the dunes.

Trails

The Cabo de Trafalgar–Caños de Meca trail connects Cabo de Trafalgar with the settlement of Los Caños de Meca along a coastal route and passes the beaches of Caños de Meca and Guadalupe.

The Caños–Torre de Meca trail is a linear hiking trail with a low level of difficulty. It is 2.3 kilometres long and has an estimated duration of two hours; Torre de Meca is one of its attractions. The Jarillo–Torre de Meca trail is also a linear hiking trail, with a moderate-to-low level of difficulty.

Viewpoints

The Trafalgar viewpoint is located at the end of the Jarillo–Torre de Meca and Caños–Torre de Meca trails. It can also be reached from the Majales del Sol recreation area.

From the viewpoint at Faro de Trafalgar, visitors can look out over the cape and the adjoining beaches of Los Caños de Meca, Zahora and El Palmar. From the viewpoint at Torre de Meca, the Tómbolo de Trafalgar, Faro de Trafalgar and Los Caños de Meca can be seen.
