Holiday apartment in Ribnica – crafts, castle and art

Ribnica is known for a centuries-old tradition of making wooden and pottery goods; one of Slovenia’s best-known fairs is dedicated to this tradition. Its traces range from demonstrations and craft exhibitions to church art, Ribnica Castle and trails through the Ribnica Valley.

Culture and crafts

At the Rokodelski Center Ribnica, visitors can experience demonstrations of traditional woodworking and pottery. The center also houses an exhibition on contemporary production of wooden and pottery goods, as well as other local crafts. The permanent exhibitions “Suha roba in lončarstvo,” “Ribnica, veličina majhnosti” and “Boj krvavi zoper čarovniško zalego” are also part of the center’s offerings. In 2022, the permanent exhibition “Suhorobarstvo & Lončarstvo” received the Valvasor Prize for outstanding achievements in museology. By prior arrangement, visitors can take part in craft workshops and make their own craft product under the guidance of an experienced artisan.

The Church of Sv. Štefan contains the original, preserved mechanical organs by Franc Goršič from 1874; they are among the largest mechanical organs in Slovenia. The church’s main altar is a work by Ivan Grohar.

Castle and history

Ribnica Castle has an open-air theater that continues to serve as a venue for outdoor events. Two restored towers of the castle are connected by a new passageway. The restored rooms of Ribnica Castle have housed the Ribnica Museum since 1961. The Park kulturnikov, with memorial markers honoring 65 distinguished people from Ribnica, was established directly beside the castle in 1982.

Art

Another cultural destination is the Miklova hiša Gallery. It primarily presents contemporary Slovenian visual art and preserves two of its own art collections.

Nature and outdoor activities

Ribnica can also be explored by bicycle: visitors can rent bicycles and use a collection of cycling routes through the Ribnica Valley. The Ricikel bicycle rental system provides around eight conventional bicycles in Ribnica and is available around the clock to all users in the municipality.

In addition to the well-marked Ribnica Mountain Trail, there are many other hiking trails in Ribnica and the surrounding area. They lead to viewpoints, natural attractions and medieval castles.
