Glažuta carries its history through unusually diverse traces: The place name recalls a former glassworks, while the chapel, Partisan hospital and memorial grave provide further historical points of reference. Added to these are sections of the Slovenian Mountain Bike Trail and the Velika Kočevska planinska pot. Within a compact narrative space, industrial history, remembrance culture and trails through the wooded landscape stand side by side.

Culture and History

The Chapel of the Sacred Heart of Jesus in Glažuta is an immovable sacral monument with registration number EŠD 14882. The name Glažuta recalls a former glassworks that Prince Karl Auersperg had built around 1835 in the forest along the road from Grčarice to Loški Potok. The former Glažuta glassworks initially produced flat glass and later curved glass. Its technological history also includes the first steam boiler in Carniola, which was used to power a grinding workshop.

The remains of the former Glažuta glassworks lie on the left-hand side of the forest road, about 300 metres from the junction where the turn-off to the south toward Perhajmska koča and the Medvednica forestry hut begins in Glažuta. Another historic site is the Ogenjca Partisan Hospital. It is located in the forest on the road between Hrib and Glažuta, was established during the Roška Offensive in July 1942, and was the first Partisan hospital in Notranjska. The hospital, located in a karst cave, was declared a cultural monument with the characteristics of a historic monument in 2000. The Glažuta memorial site also includes the mass grave of fallen Partisans on Debeli vrh, with registration number EŠD 22534.

Cycling Trails

Glažuta is also listed on the Slovenian Mountain Bike Trail. On Stage 20, cyclists continue from Jelenov Žleb toward Glažuta; Glažuta is listed as a point of interest on this stage. One stage follows a gravel road to the village of Grčarice. The Kočevska Reka–Loški Potok route runs mostly along gravel roads and cart tracks.

Hiking Trails

The Velika Kočevska planinska pot passes through the former Glažuta forestry centre and continues via Grčarice. On this route, Glažuta is checkpoint KT17 at an elevation of 770 metres. From Glažuta to Jasnica, the Velika Kočevska planinska pot runs together with the Ribniška planinska pot.
