Holiday apartment in Hrib-Loški Potok – Churches, Karst and Nature

Hrib-Loški Potok combines historical monuments with special encounters with nature and vibrant local traditions. Culture

The parish church of St Leonard, a Baroque central-plan building erected around 1670, stands on Tabor. The cemetery next to the parish church contains the filial church of St Barbara; the year 1673 is inscribed on its portal. Tabor itself is a prominent hill and viewpoint in Hrib, offering views over the surrounding area. It received its name because local residents sought safety there during the Ottoman invasions.

The surrounding area also contains reminders of more recent history. During the Second World War, the Ogenjca Cave housed a secret field hospital. A memorial plaque stands at the entrance, and nearby there is a log cabin arranged as a memorial museum. In nearby Travnik, Jakob Bartol's ethnographic collection displays objects from agriculture, transport and various crafts, including traditional woodworking tools from the Potoško area. The living heritage of local carpentry is also presented in the Loški Potok area.

Nature

The Travniški potok stream, with its swallow hole, is considered a natural attraction of Hrib-Loški Potok. Another distinctive landscape feature can be found nearby: after heavy rain, a uvala can turn into a lake in autumn and spring.

The Hribovski vrt garden belonging to the Knavs couple is designed as a park-like garden with flowering perennials, numerous maple trees, a pond and various wooden garden elements. From Hribovski vrt Knavs, there are views of the karst fields Travniško polje and Retijsko polje, as well as Tabor hill. Guests who have registered in advance are welcomed there with a homemade aperitif.

Experiences

By arrangement, experienced hunters offer bear-photography programs from carefully prepared observation hides. A traditional hike to the partisan field hospital at Ogenjca is a lasting link between landscape and memory. It takes place on the last Saturday of July each year and begins in Hrib.
