Holiday apartment in Krnica – Pokljuka Gorge and Radovna

Krnica can be explored through geological formations, river landscapes, trails and local heritage. Between gorges, viewpoints and traces of traditional craft culture, different facets of a Slovenian place emerge.

Landscape

Pokljuka Gorge is a nearly 2-kilometre-long fossil gorge up to 50 metres deep. It was formed by a former glacial river outflow from the melting glacier on Pokljuka. A circular trail with information panels about its flora, fauna and geology leads through Pokljuška soteska.

Near Krnica, the Radovna changes direction in a sharp bend and flows northeast before reaching the 1,600-metre-long Vintgar Gorge. Its walls are steep and precipitous. In the wider regional area around Krnica, the Natura 2000 site along the Radovna River also extends from the bridge area near Srednja Radovna to the Šum waterfall. The river course and part of the bank vegetation are protected.

In the wider regional area around Krnica, the Radovna flows over limestone between Krnica and Zgornji Graben and continues towards Vintgar Gorge. The Gorjanska jama, with around 1,300 metres of passages and a depth of 153 metres, is also part of the landscape. Today, it can only be accessed accompanied by speleologists.

Trails and discoveries

The Čebelarska educational and viewpoint trail leads uphill from Grabče towards the village of Krnica and has a turn-off to Pokljuška soteska. From the trail junction in Krnica, the trail offers views of Stol and Begunjščica. After meeting the road to Laze and Mežakla, it opens up views of Krnica.

The circular trail through Pokljuška soteska connects the route with information panels dedicated to its flora, fauna and geology. Thus, the same trail focuses both on the form of the fossil gorge and on the area's natural features.

Cycling

The Radovna cycling trail begins in Krnica near Zgornje Gorje. It leads from the bridge over the Radovna River in Krnica to Pocarjeva domačija in Zgornja Radovna and runs mostly along a gravel road through the valley. Including stops at the information panels, the route is estimated to take 2.5 to 3.5 hours of cycling time.

There are more than 10 information panels about the valley and its special features along the Radovna cycling trail. The information accompanies a route shaped by the valley, the Radovna River and the connection between Krnica and Zgornja Radovna.

Culture

Krnica is home to a well-preserved Alpine Baroque house built using half-timbering. Its façade features a small wayside shrine dedicated to Saint Nicholas. The village is also home to a typical Slovenian beehive with 56 painted beehive panels created by pupils of Gorje Primary School.

The renovated Čopova žaga, a sawmill, is part of the local craft history. Together with the Baroque house and the painted beehive, it represents different examples of Alpine architecture, the Slovenian beekeeping tradition and sawmilling in Krnica.
