Ljubno – Pilgrimage Paths, Frescoes and Narrow Streets

A more than 300-year-old pilgrimage path to Marija Udarjena leads to Ljubno.

Culture and History

The first records of the church, originally dedicated to Saint Lawrence, date back to 1377. An event during its renovation in the 17th century turned the church in Ljubno into an important pilgrimage site. The dates mark two different historical points of reference for the church.

The “Church of Mary Help of Christians”, also known as the “Church of 'Stricken' Mary”, stands among the picturesque narrow streets of Ljubno. Visitors can stroll through the winding narrow streets towards the church.

The houses of Ljubno stand close together on the slopes of the former pilgrimage church, the “Church of the 'Stricken' Mary”. Most of the frescoes in Ljubno were created over the past twenty years and are the work of the Russian artists Maša Bersan Mašuk and Nikolaj Aleksandrovič Mašuk.

The memory of the Ljubno bowls remains alive to this day. A local trade died out in the 20th century.

Church history, façade art and the memory of the Ljubno bowls offer three different ways of approaching Ljubno: one leads through the church and its past, another through the painted residential buildings, and the third through the local trading tradition. In this way, the villagescape gains a craft and historical dimension alongside its religious heritage.

Paths and Pilgrimage

The Otoče - Brezje pilgrimage path is an easy 4.9 km hike with a walking time of 1.5 hours. It runs mainly across meadows and through forests; a short section follows a paved road.

The Otoče - Brezje pilgrimage path allows for a detour to Ljubno, the pilgrimage church of the “Church of the 'Stricken' Mary”, and the frescoes on the façades of the residential buildings.

The path combines several features: its designated length, walking time, predominantly natural surfaces and short road section. It is also connected to the church and façades, linking the pilgrimage path with the villagescape of Ljubno.

Landscape

A cart track above Ljubno leads across a meadow to far-reaching panoramic views.

The cart track complements the village's inner streets and the pilgrimage path with its own connection to the landscape. The villagescape brings together houses standing close to one another on the slopes, paths through meadows and forests, and views across a meadow above Ljubno.
