Bled combines Lake Bled, Bled Island and historic cultural sites with a wide range of activities and facilities along the lakeshore. The destination encompasses everything from a crossing to the island and sacred traditions to handicrafts, exhibitions, swimming facilities and walking paths.
Culture
A guided tour of Bled Island provides an insight into the island’s history, its sacred heritage and its rich pilgrimage tradition. On Bled Island, the observation bell tower offers views of the lake, the shore and the surrounding peaks; the tower also has a restored clock. The Southern Stone Staircase leads uphill from the south to the central part of the island and has 99 steps.
The Potičnica on Bled Island also combines regional tradition with a culinary theme. There, poticas with various fillings and flavours can be tasted, purchased or ordered. The Potičnica also invites visitors to take part in creative ethnological activities focused on the traditional preparation and baking of Slovenian potica.
The permanent multimedia exhibition „Paradise Beneath Triglav“ can be seen at the Triglavska roža Infocenter in Bled. The infocenter also hosts various events and workshops and presents changing exhibitions. The museum in Bled Castle presents the historical development of Bled, its culture and its inhabitants. Visitors can also learn about traditional craft printing methods there and print a commemorative certificate themselves.
Sacred culture also includes the Church of St Martin. Its interior was decorated with frescoes by Slavko Pengov between 1932 and 1937. At the Church of St Martin, visitors can attend services and occasional concerts.
By the water
Bled Island can be reached by Pletna boat all year round. The handcrafted wooden boat is rowed standing up by a Pletnar. An electric motorboat service or small boats are also available for the crossing.
Grajsko kopališče Bled is located along a 260-metre-long, well-maintained lakeshore. Facilities include a water slide, a diving board, floating rafts and designated pools with varying depths. There are also children’s play equipment, a sandpit, kayaks, table tennis, board games and shaded areas for relaxing.
Changing rooms, lockers, modern toilets and outdoor showers are available for visitors staying at Grajsko kopališče Bled. There is also regulated water access for older people and people with disabilities.
Getting around
The walking paths in Bled and its surroundings are well developed for tourists. The paths are maintained and have signposts indicating names and walking times. From Straža, there are views of Lake Bled, Bled Castle, the Jelovica plateau and Mount Stol.
