Holiday apartment in Zalošče: Nature, vineyards and culture

The Zaloški bajer is an oxbow lake formed by the Vipava and a remnant of the Vipava’s former riverbed. Along the river, it is one of the best-preserved oxbow lakes. Numerous animal and plant species find refuge there.

Culture

The Austro-Hungarian military cemetery Zalošče I is located near the filial church of St. Lawrence in Zalošče. A central monument in the cemetery commemorates the fallen soldiers of the 22nd Regiment, whose recruitment district was in Chernivtsi (Czernowitz) in the former Bukovina, now part of Ukraine. The cemetery can be reached from the road from Dornberk to Zalošče; after crossing the Vipava bridge, turn right at the first junction into Zalošče.

The Austro-Hungarian military cemetery Zalošče II can be reached from the edge of the village via a gravel and cart track through the vineyards. According to Italian authorities, 120 soldiers are buried there. In the church of Zalošče, a grave plaque set into the church wall commemorates those buried there.

Hiking

The Pot med vinogradi trail begins at the Zalošče bus stop. The easy, marked route leads through vineyards as well as olive and peach orchards in Zalošče. The trail is 5.7 km long and takes approximately 1 hour and 30 minutes on foot.

Wine and cuisine

At Zaloščan Vina de Adami, all generations of the Slejk family uphold the winemaking and cellar tradition of the Vipava Valley. Zaloščan Vina de Adami cultivates 8 hectares of vineyards according to traditional methods without using herbicides. By prior arrangement, the winery offers a standard wine tasting with five wines, as well as a snack of homemade cheese and olive oil.

The Saxida winery is part of the Krog Umetnosti-Art Circle project, which connects art and wine in the Vipava Valley and Brda. At Saxida, authentic seasonal dishes with a distinctly local character are prepared. By prior order, Saxida offers a six-course tasting menu.

The Gregorič Tourist Farm produces homemade white Cuvée wines and red varietal wines. It sells its wines in bulk or in bottles and offers wine with personalized labels for purchase.
