Above Kojsko stands the Church of the Holy Cross, built around 1500. Its bell tower resembles a small fortress; at the same time, the church offers panoramic views reaching to the Alps and the Adriatic. Chapels of the Stations of the Cross lead up to this building, which comes alive with a procession on the Feast of the Holy Cross. Inside, the church houses a Gothic winged altarpiece dating from 1515, considered the only and largest almost completely preserved Gothic winged altarpiece in Slovenia.

Culture

In the centre of Kojsko stands a monumental memorial to choir director Srečko Kumar. In the parish church of the Assumption of Mary, the Baroque section was added to a small Gothic church in the second half of the 18th century; only the chancel has survived in Late Gothic form. Behind the altar is a Venetian-style curia dating from 1492.

The parish church also contains four valuable paintings donated by Count Coronini, which, according to more recent studies, are considered works by the painter De Vito.

History

The fortified heritage includes the Tabor on Sveti-Križ Hill. The complex originally had four defensive towers, built during the Ottoman incursions in the 16th century. The fourth tower is now the church tower. Lower Kojsko Castle was built in 1594 and had lower-court jurisdiction.

At the greatly reduced Lower Kojsko Castle, numerous inscription plaques and stone coats of arms bear witness to the Coronini family. Until the First World War, Kojsko was the cultural and economic centre of eastern Brda. The preserved, 300-metre-long single-track railway tunnel “Na kalehih” also points to the strategic importance of the place during the First World War.

Landscape and surroundings
