Holiday apartment in Podsabotin: Trails, churches and wine

Podsabotin combines trails on Mount Sabotin with church and local history, as well as farm products. From Podsabotin, visitors can continue on foot to Mount Sabotin. This brings very different facets of the village together: challenging trails, historic buildings and products from local farms and wineries.

Hiking and trails

The Podsabotinska hiking trail begins at the bus stop in Podsabotin. Its stated duration is 1 hour and 50 minutes, with an elevation gain of 480 metres. A challenging 11 km trail leads from Podsabotin to the guard station on Mount Sabotin and back; some sections are very steep and rocky.

The road to Mount Sabotin through Podsabotin passes the Pri Bregarju agritourism farm. It is unpaved and unsuitable for motor vehicles. A road from Solkan to Hum in Brda also runs through Podsabotin.

Churches and history

The original Church of Saint Nicholas in Podsabotin was built in the 18th century, destroyed in the First World War and rebuilt during the interwar period. The Church of Saint Nicholas has a larger rectangular nave, a presbytery with a three-sided apse and a bell tower on the south wall of the nave, which was restored in the 1990s.

After the First World War, the architect Fabiani designed a plan to renew the hamlet around the Church of Saint Nicholas. A monument to Mirko Zimic and to other fallen soldiers and victims of the Second World War was also erected in Podsabotin.

The rural Church of Saint Lawrence in the hamlet of Podsenica also has a distinctive feature: a stone bell turret. The Church of Saint Lawrence was destroyed in the Second World War and rebuilt soon afterwards.

The older settlement history includes the fact that numerous hamlets that once belonged to Šentmaver were quite isolated on the slope of Mount Sabotin until the construction of the so-called Osimo Road.

Agriculture and wine

Kmetija Jericijo in Podsabotin produces honey, olive oil and seasonal fruit. By prior arrangement, the farm offers tours of the olive grove and apiary, as well as tastings.

Valentinčič Turizem in Podsabotin offers wine tastings, cellar tours and wine sales. The Valentinčič winery’s range includes the indigenous Rebula from Brda, as well as several French varieties, including Sauvignon Blanc, Pinot Gris, Chardonnay, Malvasia, Pinot Noir and Merlot.
