Holiday apartment in Sela na Krasu – Trails, history and views of the Adriatic
Sela na Krasu is a place where village history, diverse trails and sweeping views come together. The Walk of Peace leads through the landscape, historic traces range from a prehistoric hillfort to relics of the former military railway, and the village offers views of the Adriatic. There is also a sports park, a viewpoint with a wide panorama and an Osmica serving regional specialities.
Nature and trails
The 5.2 km hiking trail of the Walk of Peace leads from Opatje selo via Nova vas, Županov vrh and Kremenjak to Sela na Krasu. This 5.2 km hike is part of the Way of Peace from the Alps to the Adriatic. A well-maintained gravel cycling and hiking path leads to Županov vrh and an 8-metre-high masonry border watchtower of the former Yugoslav People's Army (JLA).
There is also a well-defined route for horseback riding: a 25 km circular riding trail leads through Sela na Krasu. From Sela na Krasu, the riding trail runs northwards along the route of the former military railway. The combination of hiking, cycling and riding trails allows visitors to experience the landscape at different paces without equating the individual routes with one another.
A forest path leads to the Vodarna Sela na Krasu viewpoint. A paragliding launch site is located next to this viewpoint. From the Vodarna Sela na Krasu viewpoint, Trstelj, Kostanjevica, Temnica and the Cerje monument can be seen. Sela na Krasu itself also offers views of the Adriatic.
Culture and history
The Church of the Assumption of Mary, “Cerkev Marijinega vnebovzetja”, stands in the village square of Sela na Krasu. It was first mentioned in 1753. A memorial to the Slovenian professor and journalist Filip Peric also stands in the village square. The old school building is another historic landmark in the village; it was built in 1894.
Today, only the ruins of the former wall that surrounded the Podgrac hillfort remain visible on the site. The former prehistoric Podgrac hillfort is attributed to the Late Bronze Age and the Iron Age based on ceramic finds. Different periods therefore stand side by side in the village and its surroundings: the church first mentioned in 1753, the school building from 1894 and the considerably older traces of the Podgrac hillfort.
Village life and outdoor activities
The sports park in Sela na Krasu offers facilities for playing football, basketball and boccia, as well as a children's playground. Another specific facility is the PZA Sela na Krasu motorhome stop, with 14 spaces for motorhomes. The site is located on the edge of the village and offers views of the Adriatic.
Culinary experiences
The local gastronomy includes the Osmica Pri Krčarju at Sela na Krasu 3, 5296 Kostanjevica na Krasu. It opens twice a year and offers cured meat products and homemade wine. Its seasonally limited opening and specific offering give this place a clearly defined culinary character.
