Holiday apartment in Vitovlje: Trails, Culture and Chestnuts

In a hamlet of Vitovlje, visitors can see a memorial room dedicated to the local sculptor and woodcarver Stanko Hrovatin. Culture

Stanko Hrovatin devoted a large part of his life to working with wood and stone. Another cultural focal point is the old pilgrimage church of St. Mary in Vitovlje. It also served as an anti-Turkish camp and was built in the 14th century on a rocky outcrop above the village. The circular trail to St. Mary’s Church is also a nature trail with information boards. On the way to Krnica, a memorial also commemorates Saint Lucy. This is associated with a ritual in which hikers wash their eyes with water from a crevice in the rock; according to legend, this is meant to improve eyesight.

Hiking and Landscape

The Vitovska Circular Trail begins at the car park next to the event venue in Vitovlje. It follows stony paths along the slope below Čaven and offers views across the Vipava Valley. At 929 metres, Kopitnik is the highest point on the route; visitors can watch hang-gliders and paragliders take flight there. The Vitovska Circular Trail also includes Napoleon’s Road, which was built during the Illyrian Provinces.

The themed hike “Od Lijaka do Sekulaka” passes through Vitovlje. The footpath of the same name leads past springs, vineyards, cultivated fields and chestnut groves. The natural area also includes Lake Vitovsko, the only natural lake in the Vipava Valley. It is 7 metres wide, 10 metres long and up to 1 metre deep.

Traditions

Vitovlje is home to the autochthonous chestnut variety Vitovski maron. The Chestnut Festival is dedicated to it and takes place every year on the third weekend of October. The event was first organised as a one-day festival in 1997 and was later extended to two days. Raw and roasted chestnuts as well as chestnut dishes are offered. There are also stalls selling local handicrafts, exhibitions, children’s entertainment and music.

Another regular event is the annual hiking day on the Vitovska Circular Trail, held in November. It begins at the event venue in Vitovlje, lasts around four hours and is followed by a social gathering. At the end of the year, the Vitovlje Cultural and Tourism Association has organised a torchlight procession for many years. It begins at the event venue in the hamlet of Užiče and leads to the Church of the Assumption of Mary in Vitovlje.
