Holiday Apartment in Kanal: Discover the Soča, Culture and Trails
Visitors can swim in the Soča in Kanal. Here, the river has carved a 400-metre-long gorge into Lower Cretaceous limestone. Between the water, bridges, historic village centres and trails through Pečno Park, there are numerous destinations that can be explored in different ways.
Culture
One of the town’s defining structures is Kanalski most. The bridge was built in 1580, while its current appearance dates back to the 1920 renovation. Every August, Kanalski most hosts the traditional Bridge Jumps event. The KERAMOST Gallery is located in the immediate vicinity of the stone bridge over the Soča in the centre of Kanal. Solo and group exhibitions are held there throughout the year.
Kontrada is the oldest settlement centre in Kanal. During the summer months, Kontrada is also the central venue for cultural events in Kanal. The Rika Debenjak Memorial Room is located at Kontrada in the renovated Fiščeva hiša; selected documents are exhibited in the memorial room. The Hitchhiker Museum in Kanal ob Soči is also part of the town’s history and was the first museum of its kind in Slovenia.
The Church of the Assumption of Mary stands on the site where a Romanesque church once stood. Its three-sided apse with a star-ribbed vault is said to be the oldest of its kind in Slovenia. Neptunov vodnjak stands in the centre of Kanal’s square. The fountain was built in 1815 and extensively restored in 1876.
Landscape and Trails
Pečno Park has a circular hiking trail with views of Kanal. It also contains a Forma Viva sculpture garden. For mountain biking, Pečno Park has a singletrack trail. In this compact area, trails and outdoor artworks are brought together without implying that the park has a single uniform use.
The traditional memorial hike in honour of Valentin Stanič’s work is one of the trails connected with the town’s history; it takes place every year in March or April. The hiking trail following in Valentin Stanič’s footsteps leads via Sabotin and Korada to Kanal. The Jelenk Mountain Trail leads from Kanal via Kanalski Vrh to Jelenk. In addition, the “Na Kanalski vrh pod grebenom Jelenka” route follows a local road to Kanal.
A cycling route also passes directly through the townscape: the Soška kolesarska pot crosses Kanalski most.
Water and Local Traditions
On the right bank of the Soča, Kanal has an established access point to the water at the Korada campsite. Kanal Beach on the Soča is a sandy beach. This means that the town has both an established water access point and a section of shoreline explicitly described as a sandy beach.
Ribiški praznik is a traditional fishermen’s festival in Kanal. The festival includes a culinary programme focusing on fried trout. On the day of Ribiški praznik, chub fishing takes place in the morning.
