Holiday Apartment in Solkan: Soča, Bridge and Culture

Solkan showcases its distinctive features in its buildings, along the river and through its waterside activities. The Solkan Bridge has a stone arch spanning 85 metres, the largest stone arch on railway routes anywhere in the world. It has been a protected technical monument since 1985.

Culture

Villa Bartolomei is a two-storey late Baroque building with a stone portal on the ground floor and an iron balcony on the first floor. Outside regular opening hours, the villa can be visited by prior reservation. The present-day Church of St Stephen in Solkan is also part of the townscape; it was built in 1566 and given a Baroque makeover in 1657.

The ethnological collection “Stara solkanska mizarska delavnica” recalls Solkan’s old carpentry tradition. Different forms of cultural heritage therefore stand side by side in Solkan: a late Baroque building, a Baroque-style church, a protected technical monument and the memory of a traditional craft.

Activities

The Solkan Kayak Centre on the Soča is Slovenia’s national centre for whitewater kayaking. It offers kayaking courses, rafting, guided tours and equipment rental. The kayak centre also hosts national and international competitions.

The Soča Fun Park is located on the right bank of the Soča in Solkan. The adventure park has five courses and 55 different elements. There is a separate area for children aged five to nine; the central area is located three to twelve metres above the ground and is intended for teenagers and adults.

On the left bank of the Soča, Solkan has an easily accessible and prepared area that invites visitors to cool off in summer. Bungee jumping from the road bridge in Solkan, offered since 1993, is another established part of local activities.

Nature and Trails

The hiking route to Sveta Gora above Solkan passes through tunnels and trenches from the First World War. The route thus connects the landscape above the town with preserved traces of wartime history.

Local Tradition

Goriški radič, also known as “sukénski régut”, is a local speciality whose cultivation has remained particularly well established around Solkan. During production, the plants are dug up in late autumn and brought into warm indoor spaces to develop heads.
