Holiday apartment in Semič: Krupa Spring, Culture and Smuk

Semič combines karst landscapes, vineyards, religious buildings and cultural discoveries. Particularly distinctive are the Krupa Spring, the Smuk plateau and several places where history and the present can be seen side by side. Beekeeping is also part of the character of the town. The result is a multifaceted picture of Semič, bringing together experiences in nature, paths through the landscape and cultural highlights.

Nature and trails

The Kraška učna pot od Lebice do Krupe comprises 16 marked stops. The educational trail is approximately 15 kilometres long, takes about six hours on foot and can also be explored by bicycle. Along the way, it combines natural features with cultural and historical sites. The combination of marked stops, approximate length and stated walking time makes the route understandable as a continuous trail, while the option of exploring it by bicycle offers another way of getting around. The Krupa River emerges at a picturesque karst spring below a 30-metre-high vertical rock face. The emerald-green spring of the Krupa River is the habitat of the world’s only known cave mussel.

Smuk, a 547-metre-high plateau, lies above Semič. The footpath to Smuk leads from Gaber past St Primož Church, between vineyards and vineyard cottages on the slope of Semiška gora, to the pilgrimage church of St Lovrenc on Smuk. The route description makes the sequence of distinctive points clear: from the starting point in Gaber, the path runs through the wine-growing landscape to the pilgrimage church. Smuk has a launch site for paragliding and hang-gliding. West of the pilgrimage church of St Lovrenc on Smuk stand the ruins of Smuk Manor. Thus, alongside the path and the pilgrimage church, the plateau also features a historic remnant and the aforementioned launch site.

Culture and history

The Museum House Semič houses three permanent exhibitions. The centre’s content is presented interactively, educationally and with an emphasis on personal experience. Semič is also home to the parish church of St Štefan, designed in the Baroque Classicist style. Visitors can walk along the fortification wall by St Štefan Church.

Within the fortification wall stands a building called Taborska hiša; it is used for art exhibitions and cultural events. This means that several different cultural points of interest are located close together at the church and its fortification wall, ranging from religious architecture and historic walls to changing artistic and cultural uses.

Townscape and arrival

Arriving in Semič by train offers a particularly beautiful view of green hills, white houses interspersed with vineyards and vineyard cottages. Another local feature is beekeeping: Semič is known for beekeeping and honey. Both aspects are visible and recognisable characteristics of the town.
