Črnomelj combines a settlement history dating back around 3,000 years with vibrant culture, local traditions and unique discoveries in Bela krajina. Between the castle, old town, music, folklore and regional specialities, the town presents a multifaceted picture that not only preserves history but also makes it tangible in several places.

Culture and history

A central place for this is Črnomelj Castle. Its cellar rooms house the Zakladnica, which presents the natural, cultural and ethnological treasures of Črnomelj and Bela krajina in an interactive and tactile way. At the same time, it serves as a starting point for planning explorations of Črnomelj and Bela krajina. The castle itself conveys both the history of medieval knights and the history of the von Tschernembl family.

Further insights are offered by the Črnomelj Town Museum Collection in the birthplace of the poet and writer Miran Jarc, as well as by the Church of Sv. Duha with its late antique mosaic. Those who do not wish to explore the old town alone can discover it and its sights on a guided tour with a local guide.

Events

Črnomelj Castle is also an event venue: concerts, exhibitions and other events take place in its atrium and cellar. The Church of Sv. Duha is likewise a setting for musical events and various exhibitions. Jurjevanje traditionally takes place in Črnomelj at the end of June and is considered Slovenia’s oldest folklore festival. The ČrnFest youth festival is also part of the summer programme.

Flavours and crafts

Črnomelj’s local character also includes distinctive culinary connections. The market at Ajdovo zrno allows visitors to buy fresh, locally produced food directly from local producers. Črnomaljske preste represent a local baking tradition associated with female entrepreneurs from Črnomelj. In a workshop, participants can bake belokranjska pogača or Črnomaljske preste, explicitly combining a culinary experience with hands-on familiarisation with regional baking traditions.

Nature and activities

In Jelševnik near Črnomelj, visitors can see the olm in its natural habitat at the Olm Information Centre. Mitrej nad Rožancem, an archaeological monument situated in the forest, is also located near Črnomelj. Another perspective is offered by the Črnomelj Circular Cycling Route, which symbolically begins in the historic old town.

On the accommodation pages, visitors can view and compare holiday apartments. Before booking, each listing allows them to check the exact location, type of accommodation, occupancy, included services, price components, and booking and cancellation conditions. Especially in a place with a castle, old town, baking traditions, the olm and a cycling route that symbolically begins in the historic old town, these fields can be considered separately from the destination topics. What matters is what is specifically stated in each individual listing. This makes it possible to compare the information relevant to your own planning directly.
