Culture and history

A specific reference to architectural culture in Mavrlen is the Mavrlen–Križmaničeva zidanica. It is listed as architectural heritage under the designation EŠD 25568. The history of the village also includes the first school of the German School Association in Kočevska, which opened in Mavrlen in 1882. The plan to nationalise this school failed because the required number of children was not reached. Thus, the building and the school history represent different facets of the village that complement each other in terms of both time and subject matter.

Another historical site is located at the Mavrlen 2A fire station. The memorial plaque “Mavrlen, VDV” is located there. It commemorates the battles of the First Battalion of the First Brigade of the State Security Army, as well as the fighters who fell in the national liberation struggle in the Mavrlen area. The exact location at the fire station and the name of the plaque are just as much part of its connection to the village as its commemoration of the events and people in the Mavrlen area.

Landscape

Several named mountains are located around Mavrlen: Mount Okražnik, Mount Mirna Gora, Mount Lipovec and Mount Sveti Ilija. Each of these names refers to a separate mountain in the vicinity of the village. The geographical reference therefore extends beyond the immediate name of the village and includes a nearby mountain area with four explicitly named elevations.

Trails

The Mavrlen–Sveti Križ trail is registered with PD Črnomelj as an easy mountain trail. The registered Mavrlen–Sveti Križ trail section is 1,613 metres long. The name, classification and length refer to the same section and give the trail a clearly defined route between the two named places.

Mavrlen is also connected to a wine tourism cycling route: cycling route K3.3 passes through the village. In Mavrlen, route K3.3 branches off towards Doblička gora. It runs between vineyards and vineyard cottages. Thus, the village connection brings together an easy mountain trail and a cycling route whose landscape is characterised by vineyards and the associated vineyard cottages.
