Culture

The Church of St Nicholas in Adlešiči is protected as a cultural monument of local significance under the EŠD designation 1595. The protected elements include its architectural design, original building fabric and structural layout. These decorated eggs have been preserved in Adlešiči and the surrounding area, where they are made year-round as tourist souvenirs and occasional gifts. The local customs include Kresno koledovanje. It takes place in Adlešiči and the surrounding area on the eve of St John's Day, celebrated on 24 June. Singers dressed in white, known as krêsnice, visit houses and sing St John's songs. Another cultural venue is Hiša zgodb in starih znanj. It is housed in a more than one-hundred-year-old Bela krajina barn and offers hands-on experiences in Adlešiči involving the processing of natural fibres, traditional craft techniques and stories from the local population.

Under guidance, visitors can also take part in workshops and make their own souvenirs, including linen bookmarks, decorated Bela krajina pisanice and wool-wrapped soaps.

Šokčev dvor in Žuniči is one of the most significant surviving examples of a traditional, four-sided enclosed farmstead in Bela krajina and is designated as a cultural monument. Thus, near Adlešiči, alongside the open-air museum and information centre, a traditional form of rural architecture is also a central feature.
