The Slovenian Mountain Hiking Trail passes through Podkraj. In addition, there are sacred heritage sites, historic locations, and distinctive natural formations that give the place a diverse profile combining culture, hiking, and landscape.
Culture
The centrally located Church of St. Margaret in Podkraj has a Gothic presbytery. Above Podkraj, at an altitude of 1,232 metres, stands the Church of the Holy Spirit (Sveti Duh). It was built in the 15th century. During a later extensive renovation, only the Gothic portal of the original building was preserved.
Hiking
A well-marked circular trail with excellent views leads from Podkraj via Križna gora to Sveti Duh and back. The trail is suitable for hikers; Križna gora is at an altitude of 1,168 metres, and Sveti Duh at 1,213 metres. The circular trail runs mostly across meadows, is steep, and takes approximately 2.5 to 3 hours depending on walking speed, with around 410 metres of elevation gain. The route from Predjama Castle via Hrušica onwards to Javornik is also part of the Via Alpina.
History
Ad Pirum was established in Hrušica as a Roman post station on a Roman road. Later, the site gained an important position within the Late Antique defensive system of Claustra Alpium Iuliarum. The Ad Pirum Archaeological Park includes an exhibition in the Stara pošta inn. It provides insights into the Ad Pirum archaeological site and the Claustra Alpium Iuliarum defensive system. The park can be visited independently at any time; admission to the park and the museum room is free. The museum room has designated opening hours. The Church of St. Gertrude (Jere), also located in Hrušica, is considered one of the earliest Christian churches in the area. Only its foundations have survived.
Nature
Below Podkraj, the Bela mountain stream has carved a gorge. The Podkraj–Bukovje natural bridge, or natural window, a local geomorphological natural feature, is located on the Podkraj–Bukovje road. The observation tower on Križna gora offers views across all of Slovenia and beyond the border as far as Venice. At Sapotnik, a 27-metre-high waterfall plunges over a rock face. In winter, when the Sapotnik waterfall freezes, climbers climb there.
