Ajdovščina: Roman History, Art and the Hubelj
Ajdovščina brings its Roman past to life at the Castra fortress: the Roman fortress preserves an almost completely intact Roman city wall with fourteen towers. Construction of the fortress began around the year 270 as part of the defensive system on the eastern border of the Roman Empire. Culture and History
The Ajdovščina Museum Collection presents the permanent archaeological exhibition “Fluvio frigido – Castra – Flovius – Ajdovščina”, which traces the development of Ajdovščina from prehistoric times to the Early Middle Ages. Another permanent collection in the museum collection comprises around 1,200 fossils from across Slovenia, including extremely rare specimens and several fossils that were discovered for the first time anywhere in the world.
The Pilon Gallery Ajdovščina is both a museum and an exhibition venue for contemporary visual art. Its permanent collection of works by Veno Pilon includes drawings, paintings, prints, sculptures and photographs, as well as documentary materials and personal belongings. A reconstructed studio of the artist is also on display. Archaeological excavations, including a reconstructed Roman tower, are presented in a square in Ajdovščina.
Nature
The nature trail along the Hubelj River is a 3,100-metre circular route that begins at Pale Sports Park and runs just outside the town of Ajdovščina. Its 24 stations provide information about the geological bedrock and soil of the Vipava Valley, the diverse plant and animal life along the Hubelj, the rocks and aquatic ecosystem, and the dry Školj karst meadow.
At the source of the Hubelj River, waterfalls may form after heavy rainfall when water emerges from numerous karst fissures and plunges into the riverbed.
Experiences
The “Secrets of the Roman Fortress Castra” experience offers an informative and entertaining guided tour of Ajdovščina’s old town.
Ajdovščina Airport is operated by Aeroklub Josip Križaj and is intended for recreational and business aviation. The runways can be used by gliders, motorised aircraft, ultralight aircraft, powered hang gliders, balloons, helicopters, paragliders and model aircraft.
The formats mentioned differ in their focus: the tour presents the history of the town in a guided and entertaining way, the nature trail combines a walking route with geological and biological topics, and the airport encompasses various forms of recreational and business aviation. Culture, landscape and aviation thus stand alongside one another as distinct themes.
