Tekolďany: Holiday apartment between history and hilly landscapes
Tekolďany combines a loess-covered hilly landscape with a long settlement history, remarkable sacred architecture and events that are firmly rooted in community life. A holiday apartment in Tekolďany thus leads to a place where landscape, history and regional excursion destinations meet within a compact narrative setting.
Landscape and location
Tekolďany lies in the western part of the loess-covered Nitrianska pahorkatina at the upper reaches of the Tekoldiansky potok. The unforested municipal area consists of young Tertiary sediments covered by loess. The Tekoldiansky potok and the surrounding hilly landscape shape a picturesque setting suitable for walks.
Even on a clear night, the landscape remains a subject in its own right: low light pollution makes the area around Tekolďany a suitable place for observing the night sky. Tekolďany is also part of the Poniklec microregion. The 10.3 km-long Náučný chodník mikroregiónu Poniklec educational trail runs there, an easy, self-guided hiking trail that can be walked year-round.
History and sacred architecture
The written history of the place dates back to 1310, when Tekolďany was first mentioned in writing. Historical forms of the name are Tekulchen, Tukulchen, Tökőld, Tekolgyan, Tekolgyany and Tekolďany. Settlement began as early as the Neolithic period; a settlement of the Želiezovce culture was located in the area.
Among Tekolďany’s notable sights is the Roman Catholic Church of Panny Márie Ružencovej. Its construction is dated to 1936 and also to 1934. The building was inspired by 17th-century Slovak sacred architecture. As a single-nave church, it has a polygonal presbytery and an asymmetrical tower attached to the side façade of the nave.
Inside are two former altarpieces by the painter J. Zanussi, who came from Trnava. One of them is signed and dated 1804. The sacred architectural character of the village is complemented by the neoclassical Zvonica bell-tower complex, dating from 1945.
Events in community life
Tekolďany is defined not only by its buildings and landscape but also by recurring community events. These include Mother’s Day, Deň matiek, and MDD, the Slovak Children’s Day. The municipality also organizes a Gulášový turnaj, a goulash competition, as well as a Mikuláš celebration in honour of Saint Nicholas.
In March 2025, the municipality presented a newly renovated gym and invited people to train there. Thus, alongside festivals, community activities and the use of this renovated venue are also part of Tekolďany’s current public life.
Castles and mountains in the surrounding area
The immediate vicinity of Tekolďany includes Kaštieľ Horné Trhovište Castle and the mountains Holý Vrch and Chrabov. The wider area includes Hlohovský zámok Castle, Kaštieľ Moravany Castle and Pevnosť Leopoldov Fortress. The mountains Očkaj and Zlatý Vrch are also located in the surrounding area.
Thus, the immediate and wider surroundings encompass both historic buildings and elevations of the hilly landscape. Together with the Tekoldiansky potok, the educational trail and the night sky, these provide the factual setting for accommodation in Tekolďany without reducing the place to a single excursion destination.
