Leopoldov can be explored through its distinctive historical sites and a special natural area. Leopoldov Fortress was originally an anti-Ottoman fortress built in 1669 with a regular hexagonal ground plan. After losing its military significance, the fortress was converted into a prison; since 1856, it has served this purpose continuously. This sequence alone places military history and penal detention in a clear chronological context without equating the two uses. When planning your trip personally, you can consider the year, the change of use and the continuing purpose as three chronological reference points side by side.

Leopoldov railway station is step-free accessible from the reference point; it also has ground-level access for wheelchair users. These two details can be considered separately when planning personally, as they describe access from two perspectives.

When comparing a holiday apartment in Leopoldov, you can first compare travel dates, room category and cancellation conditions on the accommodation pages. These three fields help you organize your own timeframe and logistical framework objectively in advance and keep your desired travel planning clear.

History and Memory

The exhibition on the prison service brings together two levels in the first thematic room: It contains exhibits on the history of Leopoldov Prison and on the older history of penal detention. The pillory (Pranier) is a national cultural monument with ÚZPF number 930 and part of the public space at Námestie sv. Ignáca in Leopoldov. The restored pillory is also a traditional symbol of the town of Leopoldov. The exhibition and the monument can be viewed as different forms of remembrance: one through exhibits, the other through a sign in the urban space.

Culture

The Church of Saint Ignatius of Loyola was consecrated on 15 October 1712 and is dedicated to this saint. It is a Baroque single-nave building with a segmentally closed presbytery, a sacristy added later and an incorporated tower with a Romantic Neo-Romanesque design. In front of the church stands a Rococo Marian column from the mid-18th century. In this ensemble, dating, architectural form, later additions and design elements appear side by side; anyone wishing to arrange cultural sites by period and design can consider these features individually.

Nature

Štrkovisko Leopoldov adds a different character to the area. It is a wetland of local importance in the cadastral area of Leopoldov, formed after gravel and sand extraction and taking on the character of a natural standing body of water. Štrkovisko Leopoldov is intended exclusively for short-term guided recreation and sport fishing. When considering the landscape, you can place its origins, intended use and ecological function side by side as separate aspects. At the same time, Štrkovisko Leopoldov is among the wetlands recorded in the cadastral area of Leopoldov that are important for the migration and nesting of waterbirds and water-dependent birds and serve as a habitat for rare and endangered plants and other aquatic animals.
