In the Partizánske District, Veľký vrch is one of the protected areas. It covers 46.6132 hectares and is subject to the fifth level of protection. The Veľký vrch Nature Reserve covers 47.6 hectares and protects heat-loving plant and animal communities. Some species reach the northern limit of their distribution range there. The area was designated in 1967.
Hiking and Cycling
A popular cycling route runs along the Nitra River below Veľký vrch on a paved road. A hiking route leads from Malé Kršteňany via Veľký vrch, Terešný vrch, Cininova lúka, Veľké Kršteňany, Skačany and Varty to Dolné Vestenice. Partizánske, with train and bus connections, and Malé Kršteňany, with a bus connection, are available as starting or destination points for this hike. In 2025, the municipality of Malé Kršteňany implemented a project.
History
In the area of today’s municipality of Malé Kršteňany, archaeological evidence ranges from the Neolithic period to La Tène–Dacian settlement. A notable sacred monument is the Kostol Narodenia Panny Márie church. It was originally a Gothic church from the 14th century. The original church’s enclosing masonry and a late Gothic stone pastophorium with three turrets have been preserved. The church is in good condition and continues to serve its religious purpose.
The Kaplnka Panny Márie chapel is also part of the local history. Its Baroque origin is documented by its depiction on a military map from 1782–1784. The chapel is in very good condition and continues to serve its religious purpose. The municipal seal of Malé Kršteňany depicts a crowned Virgin Mary holding a sceptre and the infant Jesus in her arms. In addition to agriculture, the historical population of Malé Kršteňany also practised basketry.
Local Tradition
Malokršteniansky deň dobrôt is a traditional cultural and gastronomic event and was held for the 11th time. The festival offers homemade specialities, drinks and traditional entertainment. The programme also includes activities and attractions for children and adults.
