Žabokreky nad Nitrou combines a multifaceted local history with Farma u Ďurkových, a signposted cycling route and an annual cycling event. Historical buildings, archaeological traces, farm life and paved cycle paths come together to create a varied picture of the village.

Landscape

Žabokreky nad Nitrou lies in the northeastern part of the Nitrianska sprašová pahorkatina loess hills, on the right-bank floodplain and terrace of the Nitra River. Single-track railway line No. 140 runs through the village towards Nové Zámky–Nitra–Prievidza; the village has a railway station.

History

Archaeological finds show that the present-day area of Žabokreky nad Nitrou was already settled in the Stone Age. Settlement in Žabokreky nad Nitrou during the 7th and 8th centuries is also documented. During the period of Great Moravia, local blacksmiths produced complete sets of agricultural tools. After the village square was redesigned following the construction of the church, well-known cattle markets were held there.

Culture

The Church of Our Lady in Žabokreky nad Nitrou is an Art Nouveau church built in 1913 in place of a demolished Romanesque church dating from the 13th century. The single-nave building has a polygonal presbytery termination and side chapels. Its Art Nouveau design combines Renaissance and Neo-Romanesque elements; the interior furnishings date from the time of construction.

The local fortified manor house was originally a Gothic watchtower built around 1320 and was converted into a residential building in the 20th century. Two phases of earthwork fortifications have been identified at the fortified manor house in Žabokreky nad Nitrou, broadly dated to the 11th–13th and 14th–16th centuries. The western part of the outer fortification, including the moat, has been preserved at the fortified manor house in Žabokreky nad Nitrou.

The mausoleum of Žabokreky nad Nitrou is an Art Nouveau monument built at the beginning of the 20th century and inspired by Oriental architecture. Its architecture and interior furnishings have been authentically preserved. An access path branching off from the main road leads through an original avenue of yew trees to the mausoleum of Žabokreky nad Nitrou.

Local attractions

Farma u Ďurkových offers guided tours during which visitors can see the farm animals. For groups of at least eight people, Farma u Ďurkových organizes guided farm tours. Every summer, it also runs a one-day holiday camp where children learn about animal care and sustainable living and take part in creative activities.

Farma u Ďurkových produces unfiltered and unpasteurized beer. The U Ďurkových bistro presents a wide selection of home-brewed beers. The tour of the U Ďurkových brewery ends with a beer tasting. The farm also includes a café with a green terrace overlooking the farm.

Cycling and events

The Hornonitrianska (Ponitrianska) cycling route reaches Žabokreky nad Nitrou and previously passes through Bojnice, Nováky and Partizánske. It is 66 kilometers long in total. The cycling route follows paved paths, has a relatively easy profile and is marked in red.

The Žabokreky Tour is an annual cycling event. It includes a 1,200-meter children’s route, followed by a program with children’s attractions. The Žabokreky Tour is non-competitive; no times are recorded and no rankings are compiled.
