Kolačno lies in the northern part of the Tríbeč Mountains, at the transition to the Hornonitrianska Basin.
Nature
Part of the Kolačno municipal territory belongs to the Ponitrie Protected Landscape Area. Protection level II applies there. The protected features include preserved forest complexes on Veľký Vracov and Michalov vrch, as well as morphological and relief features and remnants of thermophilous flora. The forested parts of Kolačno comprise hornbeam, oak, oak-beech and high-quality coniferous forests.
The wetlands include “Rybník s lužným lesom pri Kolačne” and Mišove jarky. “Rybník s lužným lesom pri Kolačne” is classified locally in Kolačno and covers 70,000 square metres. Mišove jarky is a locally classified wetland located in Kolačno, covering an area of 53,000 square metres.
Culture
The first written mention of Kolačno dates from 1 June 1293 and refers to the place as “terra Kolechna”. The name itself also points to an older settlement history: Kolačno is associated with the medieval dialect word “kolešňa”. It referred to a place away from the mother settlement with temporary hay barns and animal pens.
A defining building in Kolačno is the reconstructed Roman Catholic Church of Saint Joseph the Worker. The first chapel in Kolačno was consecrated on 19 March 1912. The municipal museum displays a living room from the 1920s, a historic fire engine, tools for the production and processing of flax, and wedding attire. The municipal museum can be visited by prior arrangement.
In Ondrášová, a district of Kolačno, there is a monument to those who fell in the Slovak National Uprising, erected in 1973.
Things to do
The Kolačno multipurpose sports court with artificial turf is intended for recreational sports such as tennis, volleyball, mini-football, basketball, streetball, nohejbal, badminton and similar activities. The green cycling route 5105 leads to the Vrchhora saddle. The ruins of the Church of Saint Michael and the Chapel of Saint John of Nepomuk are located there. A viewpoint can be reached from Vrchhora in approximately 15 minutes on foot.
Michalov Castle can be reached from Ondrášová by bus from Partizánske via Veľké Uherce and Kolačno to the terminus in Ondrášová. Road III/51101 runs through Veľké Uherce, Kolačno and Ondrášová, connecting these places to the interregional and regional transport network. Bus services operated by SAD Prievidza connect Kolačno with Partizánske, Nováky and the neighbouring municipalities.
A competition for German Shepherds for the Pohár SNP, organised by the Kolačno Cynological Club, is held regularly in Kolačno. The documented event has already been held for the 21st time.
