Holiday apartment in Záskalie – gorges and hiking trails
Záskalie is located in a basin of the Strážov Highlands. One of the reasons tourists visit the village is Manínska tiesňava, a national nature reserve with bizarre natural rock formations. The gorge is a narrow valley of the Manínsky potok stream and is enclosed by rock walls up to 400 metres high.
History
The history of the village dates back to 1379, when Záskalie was first mentioned. The historic municipal symbol dates from the 18th century and depicts a snipe. This snipe is not used as a symbol by any other municipality in Slovakia.
Nature
The approximately 500-metre-long Kostolecká tiesňava rocky gorge is located nearby. It was formed by the epigenetic incision of the Manínsky potok stream into the Drieňovka limestone rocks. Rare and strictly protected species in the surroundings of Záskalie include the Slovak pasqueflower and the Apollo butterfly. There are marked hiking trails in the municipality and its surroundings, as well as an educational trail with a possible connection to the Súľovské skaly. The educational trail continues through the gorges to Kostolecká tiesňava, whose special features include, among other things, the largest rock overhang in Slovakia. The rock overhang “Strecha Slovenska” is also located at the summit of the Triangle.
Trails
Hiking route 5585 leads from Záskalie to Pod Veľkým Manínom and is 2.1 kilometres long. The marked ascent to Veľký Manín also begins in Záskalie. The route is initially marked in green and later connects to a yellow-marked route. Another option is Partizánska jaskyňa: the cave is up to 21 metres long and can be reached from Záskalie via a green-marked path through the forest.
Záskalie can be reached by public buses. A local green-marked route also connects the village with Považská Bystrica. Most of this green route between Záskalie and Považská Bystrica runs through the Strážovské vrchy Protected Landscape Area.
