Holiday apartment in Kostolec: PP Bosmany and Kostolecká tiesňava

Nature

Above Kostolec, the PP Bosmany natural monument was designated in 1994 across an area of 7.335 hectares. It consists of three rock towers and a rock massif behind them, reaching a height of 659 metres. The natural monument offers views of Manínska tiesňava and Kostolecká tiesňava.

In the vicinity of Kostolec, Kostolecká tiesňava is approximately 500 metres long and covers almost 30 hectares. It has been a nature reserve since 1970. Due to its rock overhang, it is used as a climbing area.

Active pursuits

Route 2305 is a blue-marked, easy MTB leisure trail measuring 17 kilometres, with sections on asphalt and gravel. It leads through Kostolecká tiesňava and then to Kostolec. The route is described as easy and can also be completed by families with children.

A 16-kilometre hiking route from Považská Teplá to Súľov leads through Kostolecká tiesňava, Kostolec and Vrchteplá. In the vicinity of Kostolec, a red-marked hiking trail runs through Kostolecká tiesňava from Považská Teplá to Súľovské skaly, Hričovské Podhradie and Žilina.

The municipality of Kostolec lies behind Kostolecká tiesňava on the red-marked hiking trail. The marked hiking trail to Kostolecká tiesňava and onward to Kostolec is marked red, and in some sections green or yellow.

Culture and history

The writer Peter Jilemnický worked as a teacher in Kostolec from 1932 to 1936. A memorial plaque and a bust of Peter Jilemnický stand in front of the former school building. A permanent exhibition on his life and work is located in the attic of a memorial room in Kostolec.

Kostolec has archaeological sites with settlement traces from the Early Stone Age, dating to around 22,000 BC, and from the Late Stone Age, dating to around 2,000 BC. A Late Stone Age dwelling site at the edge of a rock face beside the road to Kostolec yielded pottery, a loom weight, copper spirals, as well as radiolarite and obsidian.

The obsidian found in Kostolec originated in the Vihorlat area and points to long-distance contacts maintained by the local population as early as the 3rd millennium BC. Thus, alongside literary memorial sites, archaeological finds with far-reaching connections are also central to the history of the locality.
