Vrchteplá combines a protected mountain landscape with remarkable memorial sites and a dense network of hiking and cycling trails. The village lies within the Strážovské vrchy Protected Landscape Area, in the immediate vicinity of the Manínska tiesňava National Nature Reserve and amid the Súľovské skaly, an area of major importance for tourism. At the same time, the monument on Hôrka Hill above the village centre commemorates those who fell in the Slovak National Uprising. Thus, Vrchteplá brings together natural surroundings, regional history and varied routes.
Nature and landscape
Vrchteplá’s location provides access to several different landscapes. In addition to the immediate proximity of the Manínska tiesňava National Nature Reserve, the village is set within the Súľovské skaly, which are important for tourism. The Manínska tiesňava educational trail also includes the section “tiesňava pod Vrchteplou”. As a self-guided circular hiking route, the educational trail is 15.8 kilometres long, passes twelve stations, requires five to six hours of walking time and can be used year-round.
The first section with information boards towards the gorge below Vrchteplá runs along a state road and is accessible by bicycle or pram. Another cycling route crosses the Hoľazne ridge exactly along the boundary between Vrchteplá and Plevník-Drienové and continues to Havrania skala. From there, the view extends to Veľký and Malý Manín, the Javorníky Mountains, the Mikšová Reservoir, as well as Bytča and the surrounding area.
Culture and history
The monument to those who fell in the Slovak National Uprising stands on Hôrka Hill above the village centre. Partisans who fell in the nearby area were buried there; the monument’s present form dates from 1978. Since around 1977, astronomers have also gathered around this monument to observe the Perseid meteor shower.
Another memorial site is located in the former school. The Pamätná izba SNP is situated there, where visitors have been able to learn more about the events of the Slovak National Uprising since 1979. The former primary school building still also serves as a chapel. In this way, the site preserves both its historical function as a memorial site and its present-day use.
The events calendar incorporates the history and local customs on fixed dates. Every year on 29 August, celebrations of the Slovak National Uprising take place in Vrchteplá. On 30 April, a wreath-laying ceremony is held at the SNP monument to mark the liberation of Vrchteplá; on the same day, the popular Maypole-raising ceremony also takes place in the village.
Cycling routes, hikes and winter
Vrchteplá is integrated into several regional routes. An MTB connection leads from Prečín via Bodiná, Vrchteplá, Kostolec, Plevník-Drienové and Lávka to Mikšová, where it connects to the Vážska cyklomagistrála. In Prečín, there is also a connection to the Rajecká cyklomagistrála. The Považský hrad–Manínska Tiesňava cycling route also leads to Vrchteplá; from the signpost in the village, it continues along the blue-marked cycling route.
A route from Vrchteplá to Súľov follows asphalt and gravel roads to the saddle below Havrania skala. It then descends through the Čierny potok area to the state road to Súľov-Hradná. The Jilemnického 25-ka tourist hiking march also takes place in Vrchteplá in April. Finally, when snow conditions are suitable, there is a cross-country skiing connection from Považská Teplá via Vrchteplá to Súľov.
