Holiday apartment in Pružina: Cave, Calvary and Strážov Waterfalls

Pružina appeals to visitors with an unusual combination of sacred art, geological history and trails through the landscape. Between the village centre, the cave and the waterfalls, different facets come together to create a varied stay.

Culture

In the village centre, the Calvary of Pružina lies on a gentle hill in the grounds of the parish church of St Žofia. The church was originally Gothic and was extended with a presbytery in 1759. The Calvary originally comprised 11 Stations of the Cross objects with 18 depictions. It includes seven paintings by J. B. Klemens from 1863 and four paintings by K. Švestka from 1880. The different years of creation give the ensemble a clearly recognisable chronological depth, without requiring its individual components to be viewed separately.

Another cultural stop is the museum exhibition in Pružina, which includes a memorial room. This brings sacred art, local memory and the history of the Calvary together in a shared cultural context within the village.

Nature

The Pružinská Dúpna Cave was formed by the long-term erosion of Mesozoic limestone by underground water. Its main passage is open to the public and is more than 300 metres long. The cave also has ecological significance: bats mainly use it as a winter shelter. In this underground space, the effects of water on the rock, public accessibility and seasonal use by the animals thus come together.

Access to the Pružinská Dúpna Cave leads from the Pružina-Priedhorie district via the Karol Brančík educational trail. A guided tour of the cave can be arranged with the chairman of the Strážovské vrchy Speleology Club. The visit can therefore be experienced both via the educational trail and through an expert-guided tour.

Outdoors

Pružina can serve as a starting point for hikes to the Strážov Waterfalls; these take approximately 3.5 hours. Near the Sedlo pod Strážovom saddle, leave the yellow-marked hiking trail for the waterfalls. The route description thus combines an approximate time frame with a clearly named landmark and the marking of the branching hiking trail.

The Strážovský Stream rises in the surroundings of Pružina. After 100 metres, it descends over rock steps to form two waterfalls: the Upper Waterfall and the Lower Waterfall. The surroundings of Pružina also offer opportunities for walks. In addition to the longer hike to the Strážov Waterfalls, shorter paths through the immediate area are therefore also part of the local landscape.

Local traditions

Fašiangy in Pružina are associated with a domestic pig slaughter. This tradition complements the cultural sites and natural destinations with an insight into a local festive tradition.
