Waagbistritz represents a travel setting between nature, history and regional culture. In Považská Bystrica and the Trenčín Region, the specific highlights range from narrow rocky gorges and educational trails to museums, churches, castle ruins and lively folklore events.

Nature and Educational Trails

An informative way to experience the landscape is the educational trail in Milochov. Along the path, eight panels provide information about the fauna and flora of the surrounding area, the geological composition, the district’s protected areas, and the history and archaeology of Považská Bystrica. The educational trail also offers a view of Považská Bystrica.

The Manínska tiesňava is particularly striking. It is located in Považská Bystrica, in the Považská Bystrica District and the Trenčín Region. The gorge is less than one kilometre long and is 3.7 metres wide at its narrowest point. An educational trail leads through the nature reserve.

Culture and History

In its zoological exhibition “A Walk Through Our Nature”, the Vlastivedné múzeum v Považskej Bystrici presents the wildlife of the surrounding area. The exhibition includes forest animals, birds and animals that live near watercourses. The Mestské múzeum Považská Bystrica presents the historical and cultural heritage of the city and the region through authentic collections, exhibitions and themed events. Its collections are available to tourists interested in the history of the region.

The preserved ruins of Považský hrad rise above the city’s history. They are located in Považské Podhradie, a district of Považská Bystrica. The castle was built in the 13th century after the Mongol invasion of Hungary as a royal castle. A marked circular trail leads from Považské Podhradie to Považský hrad and back to Považské Podhradie, with a total duration of 40 minutes.

The Horný Moštenec Museum also preserves everyday and village history in a special form: It is housed in a wooden cottage dating from 1932, divided into a kitchen, a room and a space with agricultural equipment. Visitors can take part in a guided tour with expert explanations. Over the course of the year, it hosts Driapačky gatherings, Christmas in the Village, carnival events, slaughter festivals, an Easter exhibition, handicraft exhibitions, children’s creative workshops and gatherings, among other events.

Another detail relating to church history can be found in the presbytery of the church: A fresco by Edmund Massanyi from 1959 hangs on the wall above the altar. The original church building was constructed towards the end of the 14th century in the late Gothic style; the presbytery and the rear section with the tower have been preserved.

Hiking and Cycling

One of the longer route options is a 6 km circular trail. It is easy, can be walked in both directions and was opened in 2000. At a leisurely pace, completing it takes approximately three hours. Alongside the short circular trail from Považské Podhradie to the castle, this provides a second, considerably longer route in the area.

The PB–Milochov–Nimnica Kúpele–PB route starts at the railway station in Považská Bystrica, leads through Milochov and along the Váh to the Nosická Reservoir, and reaches the city centre again via the Orlové Bridge. The PB–Manínska tiesňava–Kostolec–Praznov–PB route leads from Považská Bystrica through Manínska tiesňava, via Kostolec and Praznov, and then back towards the city.

Folklore and Regional Places

The Praznovské folklórne slávnosti are a recurring folklore event associated with Praznov and Považská Bystrica. The 23rd edition is documented for 2024 and the 24th edition for 2025. Alongside the museums and historic buildings, this creates a cultural focal point that brings together tradition, local history and events.

Other Places

Pružina, Vrchteplá, Stupné, Horný Lieskov, Ďurďové, Sádočné, Horna Marikova, Papradno
