Holiday apartment in Plevník-Drienové: Natura 2000 and mountain traditions

Plevník-Drienové lies within the Strážovské vrchy Natura 2000 site. The municipality is home to protected habitats, bodies of water, mountain traditions and cultural attractions.

Nature

The Strážovské vrchy Natura 2000 site consists predominantly of forest and rocky habitats. It is significant for the breeding of birds of prey and owls; the species mentioned include the peregrine falcon (Falco peregrinus) and the boreal owl (Aegolius funereus).

Water

Jazero Sihoť is a body of water that formed on the site of a former gravel pit in Plevník-Drienové. The educational trails there feature information boards about the nearby fauna and flora. They also provide interesting information about the history of Plevník-Drienové and its surroundings. Jazero Sihoť also has an area for birdwatching and an introduction to ornithology.

A safe access route to Jazero Sihoť was created for visitors with disabilities in cooperation with the municipality. The park at Jazero na Sihoti includes the “NABOSO” barefoot sensory fitness trail. Fishing is possible at Jazero na Sihoti with a permit. Those interested must contact the relevant authorities by telephone to receive information and instructions on obtaining a fishing permit.

Activities

The tradition of the Jozefovské outings leads to Havrania skala, the highest peak in the municipality at 835 m. A Slovak double cross stands at the Malý Manín viewpoint; members of the local tourist association erected it in 2004 with the support of the municipality.

The New Year's Eve outing to Malý Manín also continues to take place. Afterwards, kapustnica is traditionally served at the hut near Dlhé lúky.

Culture

The Dominik Tatarka Memorial Room was established in 1991 on the grounds of the local primary school. In 12 display cases, it presents photographs, newspaper articles, documents and manuscripts from the writer's private and public life. The school offers the public guided tours of the Dominik Tatarka Memorial Room with expert commentary.

For the past 21 years, Dominika Tatarku Primary School has organized the nationwide literary competition “O cenu Dominika Tatarku”. The competition is announced each March, with the ceremonial award ceremony held in May. Regular cultural events in Plevník-Drienové also include performances by the Dúbravček folklore group with a Christmas programme. The group also regularly organizes a masked carnival procession and the traditional burial of the double bass there.

History

Since 2021, the municipality of Plevník-Drienové has operated the Pálenica, where it offers fruit distillation in a traditional wood-fired distillation facility. The Pálenica in Plevník was first mentioned in 1767. Distillates from the Pálenica in Plevník received a medal for the high quality of the product at the Upper Hungarian Exhibition in Žilina in 1903.

The Chapel of Saint King Stephen is a late Classicist chapel from the mid-19th century. After the previous structure collapsed in 1824, a wooden bell tower with a wooden cross was first erected on the same site in 1831; the Chapel of Saint King Stephen was completed in 1855.
