Holiday apartment in Matiašovce – Churches, river terraces and Tatra views

A historic building in Matiašovce is Kostol Sv. Petra a Pavla. The church was built at the end of the 13th century in the Early Gothic style. The church is surrounded by a wall with fourteen semicircular chapels forming a Way of the Cross; the current Stations of the Cross images date from 1835. The building thus combines an Early Gothic origin with a Way of the Cross design that remains clearly recognizable to this day.

Nature

Matiašovce is located in the Spišská Magura along the course of the Rieka River. The local terrain is hilly and transitions into the hilly relief of river terraces. The landscape can therefore be understood through specific names and forms: the Rieka denotes the river course, Spišská Magura the geographical area, and the river terraces the characteristic further development of the relief.

The cadastral territory of the municipality of Matiašovce lies in the protected zone of Pieninský národný park National Park; the second level of nature protection applies there. Alongside the hilly terrain, the landscape therefore also has an explicitly stated protection status.

The spatial details complement one another: the course of the Rieka River, its setting in the Spišská Magura, and the river terraces describe different levels of the same landscape. The protection status adds another clearly defined classification to this description. This makes it possible to consider the terrain, geographical area, and nature protection together without requiring any additional local classification.

For orientation in the village, there is a tourist information system with two entrance boards and three covered map stations located in glazed bus shelters. The map stations serve as rest areas for tourists. Their maps provide information about street names, parts of the village, and historic monuments, thereby making it easier to find one’s way around Matiašovce. The stations thus combine a covered place to rest with information about the naming, structure, and history of the village.

Culture

Matiašovce’s sacred architecture also includes the Roman Catholic Church of Sedembolestnej Panny Márie. It was built from 1990 to 1992. Next to the church is a bell tower originally dating from the Renaissance and the end of the 16th century. The two buildings thus represent different historical periods: the church was built between 1990 and 1992, while the bell tower originally dates back to the Renaissance and the end of the 16th century.

Vyhliadka Matiašovce has a modern shelter and an observation platform overlooking Tri Koruny as well as the Belianske Tatras and the High Tatras. The destinations named thus range from Tri Koruny to the two Tatra landscapes. The starting point for Vyhliadka Matiašovce is at the car park by the municipal office. Barbecuing is possible on the grounds of Vyhliadka Matiašovce.

At Vyhliadka, a shelter, an observation platform, a specifically named starting point, and the option to barbecue are therefore combined without requiring any further amenities.
