Holiday apartment in Lechnica: Culture, nature and mountain biking

Lechnica combines historic traces with a landscape where the Dunajec runs along the edge of the village and parts of the village belong to Pieniny National Park. Between the valley of the Havka stream, the Spišská Magura and the Lechnica single trails, culture, nature and sports routes come together in a compact destination area.

Culture

A particularly significant historical landmark is the Church of Saint Jodocus. Its patronage has been documented in Lechnica since 1419 and is so far considered the only historically documented patronage of this saint in Slovakia. The present church was built in 1830 after the previous church burned down in 1825. The villagescape also preserves its own past: Lechnica is a former farming village with surviving elements of folk architecture.

The history of the church reveals several chronological layers: the documented veneration of Saint Jodocus was followed by the fire that destroyed the older church, before the present building was constructed. Together with the surviving elements of folk architecture, this creates a villagescape in which ecclesiastical history and the former farming character remain legible side by side. The historical focus therefore lies not only in a single building, but also in the preserved structure of the former village.

Landscape

Lechnica lies in the valley of the Havka stream at the foot of the Spišská Magura. Parts of the village belong to Pieniny National Park, where the second level of protection applies. Several prominent peaks are located nearby: Klejowa, Facimiech, Łysina – 792 m above sea level in the Pieniny, as well as Mount Trzy Korony. The natural attractions are complemented by a wild boar enclosure in Lechnica.

The landscape can therefore be understood through several spatial references: the Havka valley describes the village's immediate location, while the Spišská Magura marks the foot of the mountains. The national park extends partly into the village and is associated with the second level of protection. The named peaks are located in the nearby surroundings and complement this landscape with clearly identified terrain features. The wild boar enclosure adds another specific destination within Lechnica to the natural area.

Activities

The visitor attractions include renovated hiking trails. In winter, Lechnica has several groomed cross-country ski tracks. For mountain bike tours, the Lechnica single trails provide a 15-kilometre network of mountain bike routes in the heart of Pieniny National Park. The GRIFTOF route is nine kilometres long and is described as a family route. Those looking for a more demanding descent will find GVIZD, a 1.3-kilometre downhill track for experienced riders. The GRIFTOF and ŠPICA routes run through coniferous forest and meadows. The named routes therefore differ in length and difficulty.

The route details make the different forms of the offering directly comparable without reducing them to a single type of travel. Renovated hiking trails and groomed cross-country ski tracks stand alongside the mountain bike network and its differently described routes. For the single trails, the details regarding length, terrain and difficulty complement one another: GRIFTOF and ŠPICA are characterised by coniferous forest and meadows, while GVIZD is classified as a demanding downhill track. This creates an activity area with clearly distinguishable route features.

Surroundings

Several destinations with a historical character are also located outside the village. In the surroundings of Lechnica are Niedzica Castle - Zamek XIIIw. and Niedzica Castle (Dunajec) - Zamek. Červený Kláštor Monastery is located in the immediate surroundings of Lechnica. Further afield in the region lies Rytro Castle.
