Slovenská Ves: Holiday apartment between churches, nature and cycle route

Slovenská Ves lies in the northwest of the Poprad Basin on the southern slope of the Spišská Magura, in the valley of the Slovenský potok. The Roman Catholic Church of the Purification of the Virgin Mary adds a special cultural and historical accent: it was built in the second half of the 14th century and remodelled in the Baroque style in 1769. Its main altar includes a rare Late Gothic Madonna from 1510, created in the workshop of Majster Pavol z Levoče.

Geographical setting

The location of Slovenská Ves is also shaped by its road connections. The village lies at a road junction with connections to Spišská Stará Ves and Tatranská Kotlina. In geographical terms, Slovenská Ves belongs to the surroundings of the Spišská Magura and is also closely connected with the valley of the Slovenský potok.

Culture

A protected historic park is located in the centre of Slovenská Ves. Only a remnant of the original planting has survived. The present-day Evangelical church is also part of the village landscape; it was built in 1906–1908 in the Neo-Gothic style according to a design by the builder and entrepreneur József Mitra from Košice.

Historical traces extend beyond the churches and the park. Finds of Stone Age stone artefacts from the Late Palaeolithic have been recorded near Kamence. An abandoned medieval village also stood there in the 14th to 15th century. A kúria with ÚZPF number 947/1 is also recorded in Slovenská Ves.

In the cemetery, a wooden memorial pavilion bears the names of local residents who fell in the First and Second World Wars. The pavilion adds a place explicitly dedicated to remembrance to the village’s historical monuments.

Nature

Lúka Kúty is a wet, tall-growing meadow biotope on the lower course of the Slovenský potok, east of the agricultural facility. Partly protected, protected and endangered plant species occur there, including the rare and endangered marsh helleborine (Epipactis palustris).

In the surroundings of Slovenská Ves, the Belianske lúky nature reserve offers an 800-metre nature trail with seven information panels. At its end, a 250-metre elevated wooden footbridge provides a direct view into the protected area. The final section is inaccessible to bicycles. Two sites with beaver populations are also located in the cadastral area of Slovenská Ves.

Activities

The sporting facilities include the lift at SKI CENTRUM ĽANDY. It is 400 metres long, ascends 120 metres in altitude and has a capacity of 300 people per hour.

Cyclists can also find a specific point of reference in the network of routes: a cycle route that passes through Červený Kláštor continues through Slovenská Ves, Spišská Belá and Kežmarok. In addition, the cycling race “Okolo Slovenskej Vsi” is associated with two stated editions. The 9th edition was held in Slovenská Ves on 30 June 2025, and the 10th edition on 27 June.
