Holiday apartment in Jelšovce – Archaeological Traces along the Nitra
In Jelšovce, the history of settlement dates back to around 4500 BC. At the archaeological site, it continued almost uninterrupted through the Stone Age, Bronze Age, Hallstatt period and La Tène period. At the same time, the village is located in the southeastern part of the Nitra Loess Hills, in the floodplain and on the terrace of the Nitra River.
Culture and History
Systematic archaeological investigations in Jelšovce uncovered 495 settlement structures and 447 inhumation graves across an area of approximately two hectares. The site therefore combines settlement traces and burials from a long sequence of periods.
The Early Bronze Age cemetery of Jelšovce contains traces of the Nitra, Únětice and Maďarovce cultures. It is considered the largest cemetery of its period studied to date in the Czech Republic and Slovakia and also holds a leading position in the Central European region.
The most important monument in the municipality is considered to be the Roman Catholic Church of Saint Mary Magdalene.
The Jelšovce Memorial House preserves the material heritage of the ancestors in three rooms – a chamber, kitchen and living room. The surviving items include traditional costumes, furniture, pictures, period room interiors and a spinning wheel. A visit can be arranged by agreement with a local contact person.
Landscape
The unforested surface of the municipality lies on hilly land and an alluvial plain. It consists of Young Tertiary deposits covered by loess and alluvial sediments. Chernozem and floodplain soils occur in this landscape area.

An educational trail runs through Šibeje Park, which offers numerous activities for children and recreational areas.
The green ADIGAŠ sports area in Jelšovce revitalized a previously neglected football field and added further facilities for children, young people and adults for sports and leisure activities.
The waterworks is located at kilometre 72.105 of the Nitra River in the cadastral area of Jelšovce. It serves to generate energy, raise the water level for users with a water rights permit, support fish farming and provide opportunities for sports and recreation.
