Holiday apartment in Výčapy-Opatovce: vineyards, the Nitra Valley and cultural heritage

Výčapy-Opatovce is located in the Nitra Valley. The municipality lies at an elevation of 146–230 metres in the southeastern part of the loess-covered Nitrianska pahorkatina, in the Nitra floodplain and on its terrace. West of the village, the historic vineyards on the hill disappeared after 1960; a new vineyard was planted there recently.

Landscape

At the vineyard area near St Urban, there is a view of Výčapy-Opatovce, the meanders of the Nitra and the Tribeč Mountains opposite, with the distinctive Žibrica mountain. A footpath leads from the village centre to the vineyard area; depending on the route chosen, it takes approximately 20–30 minutes and is about 1.5–2 kilometres long. There is a pavilion and a fireplace for grilling. However, there is no drinking water or buffet at this location.

Culture and history

The Roman Catholic Church of All Saints stands in Výčapy. It was built by the nobles of Seku and was first mentioned in 1332–1337. Opposite it is a Baroque manor house commissioned by Prince Frigyes Hohenzollner in the mid-18th century. The Baroque Chapel of St Joseph, dating from the early 18th century, stands in the Výčapy cemetery. Opatovce Square is also home to a brick bell tower from 1815. The former Church of All Saints was incorporated into a new complex, where it forms the All Saints side chapel.

The cadastral area also preserves traces of very different periods. A Palaeolithic settlement site was discovered. Neolithic settlement associated with the Linear Pottery, Želiezovce and Lengyel cultures has also been confirmed. There are also finds from Roman times, as well as Old Slavic and Great Moravian settlements.

The cultural year combines religious celebrations with traditional customs. The Feast of St Urban takes place in the vineyards above Výčapy-Opatovce; every year, the local winegrowers' association organises celebrations for the patron saint of winegrowers. The festival includes a festive Mass and the traditional blessing of the vineyards. At the festival on 23 May 2026, visitors were able to taste homemade wines from the region.

The local NÁDEJ singing group performs traditional customs. These include the harvest festival with the presentation of the harvest wreath, hay and love songs, spinning-room gatherings and feather-plucking for a bride. The cultural programme and folklore festival “Rok na dedine” takes place every October, presenting customs and splendid folk costumes while bringing local groups together with groups from surrounding villages. During the carnival season, the tradition of the “fašangoši”, which has survived to this day, is also observed: boys walk through the village with an accordion, dance traditional dances in front of the houses and invite the women and girls to dance. The Nefelejcs group recalls the original Hungarian songs and customs of their ancestors and brings preserved, richly embroidered folk costumes out of the chests.

Activities

With the operator's consent, the sports hall in Výčapy-Opatovce is available to the public for sports, competitive, recreational and leisure activities. The playing surface is designed for handball, football, basketball, tennis, volleyball, badminton and floorball.

For cyclists, the Ponitrianska long-distance cycling route No. 019 begins at the embankment near Výčapy-Opatovce. It runs from Výčapy-Opatovce towards Nitra along the grassy embankments of the Nitra. The red MTB route is 74.9 kilometres long, of moderate difficulty, and runs along paved roads as well as field and forest paths.

Výčapy-Opatovce is located on the main road between Nitra and Topoľčany. The village has a railway station named Výčapy-Opatovce.
