Holiday apartment in Báb: Nature, history and local products

Báb leads from a loess hill landscape with small forests and protected natural areas to churches, manor houses and local products. It is precisely the interplay between landscape, local history and regional everyday life that makes the village a destination with many different facets.

Nature

Báb is situated in a loess hill landscape. On the slopes of a small valley southeast of the village are small oak and hornbeam forests, while other parts of the area have been deforested. Another landscape feature is the Vodná nádrž Báb reservoir, which was created in the cadastral area of Malý Báb on the Bábský potok stream. It covers approximately 18 hectares, serves for irrigation and has a total usable storage capacity of 600,000 m³. As a carp fishing water, the Vodná nádrž Báb covers 27 hectares; local and special fishing permits apply to it.

The Natura 2000 site SKUEV0869 Bábsky les is a preserved forest island in an agricultural, gently hilly landscape of the Trnava hill country. It contains oak forests on loess, Pannonian oak-hornbeam forests and old, mighty trees. The Bábsky les National Nature Reserve was designated in 1966 and covers 30.39 hectares. The fifth level of protection applies in the reserve; the third level of protection applies in its 100-metre-wide buffer zone outside the reserve boundary.

The Veľký Báb National Nature Reserve also preserves a distinctive landscape: remnants of floodplain forests can be found on the broad floodplains of the Nitra and Žitava rivers. Pheasants, quails, hares and other field rodents and birds live in the so-called cultural steppe.

History and architectural heritage

The first known written mention of Báb appears in a document written in 1156 by Martírius, the Archbishop of Esztergom. On Calvary Hill stands a complex consisting of a raised earth mound with three crosses at the top.

Báb is also home to the Baroque church “Kostol sv. Imricha”. It was built in 1721 on the site of an older religious building that had already been mentioned in 1559. Inside, the church has a Classicist high altar with a painting of Saint Emeric before the Virgin Mary. It also features Rococo side altars dedicated to the Pietà and Saint John of Nepomuk, as well as an 18th-century Rococo pulpit with a relief depicting scenes from the life of Christ.

The “Veľký kaštieľ, Alexandrov dvor” manor house is surrounded by an extensive landscaped park dating from the first half of the 19th century. The Bábsky park protected landscape area was designated in 1982 over an area of 4.22 hectares to protect the historic park around the manor house. The manor house itself is a Secessionist building erected in 1908 and inspired by Late Baroque architecture.

Local life

The local events calendar includes Bábska kotlinka, a recurring local event. Its eighth edition was planned for 2026. The Sýpka u Ludvíka shop offers an insight into seasonal products: it often stocks fresh Cheesio cheeses, jams made from seasonal fruit and eggs from its own hens. In autumn, duck liver in its own fat is available; during the holidays, egg liqueur; and in spring, herb pesto.
