Holiday apartment in Čifáre – history, landscape and local traditions

Čifáre is a place with the earliest settlement dating back to the Palaeolithic. The landscape, sacred architecture and local events complement this historical profile and give this small destination a multifaceted character.

Landscape

Čifáre lies in the northern part of the Pohronská pahorkatina and in the valley of the Telinský potok stream. The hilly area consists of younger Tertiary clays, sands and gravels covered by loess. This gives the landscape a clearly recognisable geological foundation that combines with the gentle forms of the hills.

The area around Čifáre is predominantly deforested. Remnants of oak forests remain in the southeast and northwest. There is also a 16-hectare water reservoir in the eastern part of the municipality. Hills, open areas, individual woodland remnants and the body of water thus form the main landscape elements of the place.

History and culture

The archaeological sites preserve several specific traces from the early history of Čifáre. A claw-shaped tool resembling a hand axe and made of local andesite was found at Kapustnická (Káposztás). A flint core was uncovered at the archaeological site in the Bomha valley. Another site, Stredné siatie, yielded a flint scraper.

The ecclesiastical history also reaches far back. An original church in Čifáre is documented as early as 1332. The parish church of Saint John the Evangelist was built in 1774 on the foundations of the earlier church. The archaeological sites and sacred buildings thus represent different, clearly identifiable periods within the history of the place.

Local traditions

Local events include Čifáre’s 20th goulash-cooking competition, documented in 2025, and the 21st competition, documented in 2026. The 2026 edition took place at the Tibor Mészároš Football Stadium.

On 7 April 2018, the Čifáre Viticulture Association held a public wine tasting at the cultural centre in Čifáre.

Geographical setting

Čifáre is located on the I-51 first-class road connecting Levice and Vráble. This road also connects the entire area with Nitra. The location is therefore described by a named road connection between the two cities and by its relationship to the Nitra area.
