Holiday apartment in Nitra: Nitra Castle, Zobor and culture

In Nitra, a red-marked tourist route leads to the western gate of Hradisko Zobor. The destination combines distinctive cultural history with trails through the Zobor Mountains, thus providing different ways to experience the city’s special features.

Nature and trails

Hradisko Zobor is a national cultural monument covering approximately 18 hectares and extending across four cadastral areas. A yellow-marked route in the Zobor Mountains also leads to Pyramída. The approximately one-hour ascent offers views of Nitra and, in favorable weather, the surrounding area.

An educational trail in the Zobor Mountains has 27 stations and is 14.7 kilometers long in total. The ruins of the Zobor Monastery can also be visited in the Zobor Mountains; the monastery is described as the oldest monastery in Slovakia.

Culture and history

The Nitra Synagogue is a free-standing building in the Moorish-Byzantine style in the city center and was completed in September 1911. Today, it primarily serves as a concert and exhibition hall for chamber concerts, theater performances, literary evenings and exhibitions.

At the Ponitrianske Museum, the exhibition “Skvosty dávnovekého Slovenska” displays more than 2,000 archaeological objects. They are arranged chronologically from the Paleolithic to the modern era. A permanent exhibition at the Ponitrianske Museum also presents the fauna of the Tribeč region, particularly in the districts of Nitra and Zlaté Moravce, and introduces the biological diversity of the area’s animal life.

Nitra Castle is a national cultural monument. Nitra Castle and its fortifications form the largest medieval fortified settlement. The grounds are home to the Cathedral of St. Emeram, the casemates, the Vazula Tower and the Diocesan Museum, all of which can be visited. Nitra Castle is accessible by car; the walk from Župný dom takes approximately 15 minutes.

Nitra Calvary is also one of the city’s notable cultural sites. It has twelve chapels and offers views across the entire city. The Mission Museum can be visited at the Calvary.

Museums and special experiences

The Slovak Agricultural Museum in Nitra is an open-air museum presenting the history of agriculture in Slovakia. The museum offers rides on a narrow-gauge steam railway around its open-air museum.

Mestský park na Sihoti offers children’s attractions, playgrounds, slides, a maze, a farm and a historic frog fountain. In addition to the historic sites and trails in the Zobor Mountains, this provides concrete destinations with various opportunities for play and discovery.

City life and events

Nitra regularly hosts the International Divadelná Nitra Theatre Festival in September. For the warmer months, the Nitra tourist train is also relevant: it runs from June 1 to August 31 between Svätoplukovo Square and Pribina Square below Nitra Castle.
