Holiday apartment in Žirany – Culture, nature and historic trails
Žirany lies in the Žirany Pass at an altitude of 251 m, in the headwaters of the Hunták and Bocegaj streams. The village combines a clearly recognizable landscape with abundant traces of history: chapels, churches, traditional adobe houses, a folk house and a municipal museum stand alongside paths through the surrounding area.
Landscape
In the vicinity of Žirany, on the southern slopes and ridge of Žibrica, lies the 68.59-hectare Žibrica Nature Reserve. It represents a forest-steppe landscape and thermophilous deciduous forests on a limestone substrate. The history of the landscape is also connected with limestone: on the eastern slopes of Vápenník and Žibrica, the hand extraction of limestone and the production of quicklime in simple kilns have been documented since the 17th century.
The red-marked Ponitrianska magistrála passes through Žirany. The Kostoliansky educational trail between Gýmeš and Kostolianske lúky has stops 32, 33 and 34 in Žirany.
Culture
The municipal museum of Žirany was built from an extension of a former shop and its storage area. Its ceremonial opening took place on 11 December 1977. The historic villagescape also includes preserved adobe houses with three rooms and hipped roofs, which can be seen in Žirany.
Several religious buildings add distinct historical accents. The Chapel of Saint Urban in the vineyards was built in 1795. In the parish courtyard of Žirany, near the road, stands a stone cross dating from 1823. The Chapel of Saint John of Nepomuk dates from 1843, while the Chapel of Saint Vendelin in Žirany dates from 1912. Žirany also had a Baroque church dating from 1734; the present church was rebuilt in 1938–1939.
The Žirany folk house, also called a tájház, houses an exhibition on folk culture. A memorial plaque is also located in the vestibule of the Žirany cultural centre. A prior appointment is required to visit the folk house.
Things to do
The Žirany leisure centre includes an amphitheatre, a traffic training area, swings, a slide, two tennis courts, a volleyball court and a concrete surface for mini-football. The various areas are all located within the same leisure centre and range from sports facilities and playground equipment to an amphitheatre.
Practical information
Žirany can be reached by regional bus services, and parking is also available. Another historical trace leads back to the year 1379: a written record documents that the Esztergom Chapter established the right to import wine from Žirany.
