Holiday apartment in Lúcnica Nad Zitavou: Trails, Pilgrimage and Culture

Lúcnica Nad Zitavou combines a short route through the landscape with remarkable traces of piety and architectural history. Around Vajkovská Studnička, the Vajkovská stará Žitava educational trail and the historic buildings of Vajka nad Žitavou, different facets of the area can be seen: a spring on a gentle slope, a pilgrimage site described as “lost”, and Baroque and late Baroque buildings.

Nature

At Vajkovská Studnička, a spring rises on a gentle slope. There is a stone well and a chapel there; planted green areas, an ornamental pond, benches, a fire pit and an information board are also part of this site. Vajkovská Studnička in Lúčnica nad Žitavou is regarded as a “lost” pilgrimage site. The site can be reached at the beginning of Vajky nad Žitavou in the Lúčnica district. From the direction of Dyčka, the path leads across the railway line and along the stream to the chapels and the spring.

Trails

The Vajkovská stará Žitava educational trail begins behind the Vajka nad Žitavou manor house and runs upstream along the Žitava to Horné lúky. The linear walking trail is self-guided, accessible in both directions and usable year-round. It is 1 km long, has no change in elevation and can be completed in about 30 minutes. The trail therefore describes not only a route along the river, but also a clearly defined course with four stations.

Culture

The architectural history of the area reveals several historically related but differently preserved examples. The Chapel of Panny Márie Šaštínskej dates from 1733. The Vajka nad Žitavou manor house is a late Baroque, single-storey building from the mid-18th century with a U-shaped floor plan. The manor house was surrounded by an extensive 18th-century park. Today, the manor house is abandoned and falling into disrepair.

The historic architecture also includes Ferencyho mlyn pri kaštieli, an originally Baroque mill building that probably dates from the mid-18th century. The mill was reconstructed in 2010, while its essential elements were preserved. The Church of sv. Jána Nepomuckého is a late Baroque church from the mid-18th century. It was extended with side aisles in 1911 and remodelled in the 1950s. It is in good condition and continues to serve its religious purpose.
