Holiday apartment in Jelšava: Castle, culture and kayaking on the Muráň

Jelšava combines castle history with neoclassical architecture and activities on the Muráň River. Jelšava Castle is located in the cadastral area of the town of Jelšava, 3 kilometres west of the town centre, on a spur of the Revúcka vrchovina hills. In the 14th and 15th centuries, it was the centre of the Jelšava estate. The original castle was probably built in the 1330s; it comprised a dominant castle tower and a palace building on the opposite side of the site.

Culture

One of the town's defining architectural monuments is Kaštieľ Coburgovcov. The three-storey building, dating from 1763, was added to an older Renaissance building from the beginning of the 17th century on the site of a presumed Templar monastery. In the historic Gemer region, Kaštieľ Coburgovcov is regarded as a unique building in the French Neoclassical style. Since 2015, the town of Jelšava has been carrying out conservation and restoration work on the building and makes it accessible to the public during cultural events.

Local bell production is also part of Jelšava's history: in the 19th century, there were up to 40 bell-making workshops here. The Jelšava Town Museum presents an exhibition on local bell production. The Church of Saints Peter and Paul houses a Neoclassical organ dating from 1865.

The Kaštieľ Coburgov Jelšava Information Centre offers guided tours of the castle and town from Tuesday to Sunday between 10:00 and 16:00. These include tours that also cover the Jelšava Museum, as well as tours that also include the Jelšava Evangelical Church.

Nature and outdoor activities

A mountain scooter route is approximately 6.5 kilometres long and has an elevation difference of more than 500 metres. The mountain scooter descent starts at a forestry-road junction below Hrádok Hotel. There, staff brief participants and provide helmets. The ride usually ends at the beginning of 9. mája Street on the outskirts of the town. The descent is suitable for adults and children aged 12 and over.

In 2025, a covered rest area and a dendrological information board were added along the Hrádok educational trail. There is also a bicycle service station along the trail. The Dielková viewpoint offers views of the surrounding mountains.

On the Muráň, Mestské služby Jelšava provide logistical support for rafting. On the Teplá Voda–Jelšava section as far as the road bridge, a recreational trip in one- to four-seater kayaks is possible. Kayaks with equipment are available for hire for the trip on the Muráň; transport to the starting point and from the destination, a changing room and a hot shower are also provided.
