Holiday apartment in Chyžné – Church Art and Historic Trails

Chyžné brings together sacred art, the memory of Samo Tomášik and designated trails. The Roman Catholic Church of the Annunciation of the Virgin Mary is a national cultural monument dating from the second half of the 13th century. Together with the Evangelical church and the historic memorial sites, it forms a village setting in which several centuries are visible.

Culture

The presbytery of the Church of the Annunciation contains preserved medieval wall paintings from the second half of the 14th century. The church also houses a Late Gothic winged altarpiece from 1508, created in the workshop of Master Paul of Leutschau. The open wings of the Annunciation altarpiece depict the Visitation, the Nativity, the Adoration of the Magi and Saint George. Admission to the Church of the Annunciation can be requested through the parish office in Jelšava.

The Evangelical church in Chyžné was completed and consecrated on 6 November 1786. It contains a portico-type altar dating from around 1800. The altarpiece depicts the Transfiguration of Christ; there is also a painting of the Last Supper, considered the church’s most valuable painting.

History

The memorial room dedicated to Samo Tomášik was opened on 5 September 1997 as a permanent exhibition of historical archival documents and objects. It provides information about the history of Chyžné and the life and work of Samo Tomášik. The rectory next to the Evangelical church was Samo Tomášik’s home and place of work. His grave and gravestone are located in the local cemetery in Chyžné.

The village’s mining and ironworking past is also present in the landscape through its names: it is reflected in place names such as Banský vŕšok, Hutné and Klinčiareň.

On the Way

The Chyžné–Dlhý diel–Chyžné circular hiking trail is 17.2 km long, marked in green and indicated as having a duration of 4 hours and 50 minutes. For cycling, the Chyžné–Malý Kohút mountain bike route begins in Chyžné. This route leads to a turnoff for the Klepaná skala rock viewpoint, with a shelter and cross. Cycle route 5607 connects Ochtinská aragonitová jaskyňa, Jelšava and Chyžné over 13 km.

Gotická cesta

From 1 July to 29 August 2026, Chyžné is listed on the Jelšavský and Rimavský circuits of the Gotická cesta.
