The Evangelical church in Kameňany dates from the mid-13th century and has Romanesque foundations. Inside, it preserves frescoes from the first half of the 14th century and from the 15th century. The depictions include the Virgin Mary with the Christ Child and Saint Anne, known as Metercia. The church is also listed on the Jelšava tour of medieval wall paintings. Opposite stands a historically significant Classicist building of the former Latin school, designated as a cultural monument. Next to the church stands a Rococo-Classicist bell tower from the early 19th century.

The history of Kameňany also includes traces of crafts and industry. The village historically had a pottery tradition. From 1866 to 1871, a Slovak amateur theatre was active here. Iron ore deposits were found around Kameňany; the extracted iron was formerly processed in steelworks. Taken together, these references show different aspects of the village’s history: religious painting, educational and everyday culture, local production, and the former processing of mineral resources.

Nature

The Kameňany Karst Landscape lies above Kameňany. It is a plateau and is considered the most interesting karst area of the Jelšava Karst. It is characterised by large, bowl-shaped sinkholes with diameters of up to 600 metres. At the foot of the Kameňany Karst Landscape lies the Hlavište karst spring; its average discharge is 20 litres per second. These formations and the spring give the landscape a clearly recognisable geological character, without reducing it to a single landscape feature.

Culinary specialities

A local speciality of Kameňany is a distillate made from Cornelian cherries. Alongside its architectural and landscape features, the village therefore also has its own culinary distinction.

Cycling route

On the Kameňany–Tvrdošovo cycling route, the trail initially follows a paved road in the direction of Rákoš. After approximately 1.5 kilometres, it turns left onto a paved forest road. The change from the road surface to the forest road is a precise part of the route described.
