Holiday apartment in Revúca: Culture, Views and City Trails

Revúca combines prominent reminders of Slovak educational and cultural history with unusual museums, historic sites and paths through the landscape. Between the grammar school, evangelical parsonage, Gothic church and Muráňska planina, a multifaceted picture of the city emerges – complemented by playful discoveries and a unique railway history.

Culture and History

The Museum of the First Slovak Grammar School is housed in the building of the First Slovak Grammar School. It presents the history of the Slovak Evangelical Grammar School from 1862 to 1874. The First Slovak Grammar School in Revúca opened on 16 September 1862. The evangelical parsonage also points to the city’s past: from the 1820s onward, it became an important site of the Slovak national revival movement in Gemer and Malohont.

The façade of this evangelical parsonage bears a commemorative plaque for Samuel Reuss and his sons. It was installed as a national cultural monument and commemorates the first collectors of Slovak folk tales. Another commemorative plaque for Pavol Emanuel Dobšinský recalls his work there as an evangelical priest, folklorist, editor, poet, translator, teacher and playwright.

The Gothic church in the centre of Revúca was built as early as the beginning of the 14th century. Its presbytery contains a late Gothic stone sacrament house with a wrought-iron grille from the 15th century. Litterra offers another way to access history and culture: the institution transforms historical, cultural and material heritage into an experiential venue. Its museum area is divided into four pavilions that bring to life stories of the word, writing, the image and the journey to the stars. Visitors are allowed to touch, try out and create the exhibits themselves.

The museum also offers large and small guided city walks through Revúca. Registration is required at least three days in advance.

Nature and Trails

The observation tower on Šturmanova hora offers visitors views of Revúca, the peaks of the Slovak Ore Mountains and the entire Muráň Valley. One route to the observation tower follows a 4.1 km paved forest road from Strelnica.

The 4 km Gemerská zelená cesta also begins in Revúca. It starts in Revúca’s square, leads past the railway station towards the former spa and runs over embankments and technical structures of the unfinished Gemer railway line. The route is intended for pedestrians, cyclists, families with children and Nordic walkers. Revúca is also a starting point for summer and winter tours in Muráňska planina National Park.

City Discoveries

Fairy-tale sculptures stand in various parts of Revúca at places connected with the city’s history. They depict scenes from literary works by the storytellers Gustáv Reuss and Pavol Dobšinský, which have a direct connection to Revúca or the Gemer region. One unusual station is the balloon basket of the airship Krutohlav, which visitors can sit in.
